Essay #3

In our day and age technology changes so rapidly that it becomes both costly and difficult to keep up to date on the growing market. Now, for most, keeping up to date will not be a constant day-by-day venture, but rather a more year-by-year process. This may take place more commonly in the home than in a business setting. The reason behind this may simply and most often be the financial burden. Most specificially, which will last longer and be more worth the money spent, A PC or a laptop? Several factors play a major role in the decision process, and below, those factors will be examined to help make the right choice.

One main concern given by the PC is its size and bulkiness. In most cases, the monitor is as wide as it is long, and that can be up to 20 inches in length. This poses problems because it can become difficult to fit such a length monitor on a desk without using up too much space. The same goes for the actual computer itself, or the mother board as some like to call it.  And then there is the mouse and the keyboard. All of these parts of the PC take up quite a bit of room, leaving very little for other desk essentials. Although the disadvantage of size may sway the decision making, a PC can be upgraded more than a laptop, mainly due to its size. It can obtain more memory, and more memory means the ability to install more programs. More drives can also be installed, such as CD-RWs, DVD drives, and zip drives. And it can hold more peripherals, like speakers, microphones, printers, and scanners.

Laptops, on the other hand, are the exact opposite. They are small, compact computers that perform the same function as PCs. They can be carried just about anywhere, usually in a black laptop case.  A major disadvantage, however, is the fact that it runs on a battery pack that only lasts a specific amount of time. Unlike the PC, where it can be plugged into the wall and left alone, a battery pack must either be charged, or the laptop must also be plugged into the wall, which makes it less transportable and useful on the fly. Not only this, but a laptop cannot be upgraded as far as a PC can. A laptop might include only two areas for installing drives, but usually the drives will be combinations. For example, a CD-RW and a CD-ROM drive might be combined. Also making the latop less transportable is having to connect it to such peripherals as printers and scanners. But overall, the laptop can make things a lot moer easier when on the go.

Whether there is a need for a computer at home or for travel, looking at such disadvantages and advantages as size and the ability to upgrade can help in deciding which is best. Although both the PC and the laptop contain equal amounts, it is ultimately up to the user's preferences.
