Essay #1

It rests, silent and untouched by time. A moment frozen in the confines of a rectangular image, pressed firmly into a glossy format. Vibrant blue and hints of elegant gold shimmer and stand out foremost in the gowns worn by those crowded so closely together. Illustrious colors mingle in the folds that waver in a perpetual breeze, a breeze that sweeps away the age old habits that plague the minds of high school students, only to make room for the new age lives that will be of the friends poised in happiness.

Glorious blue caps adorn their heads, like icing on a cake, and bands of golden silk, strung from their centers represent the past four years that, over time, have altered perceptions and developed stronger bonds than one would have ever imagined. For when these golden bands are flipped from left to right the wrinkles of time will develop new patterns.

A group of smiling faces; cheeks pinned back with unbelievable happiness. Yet a sense of nervousness and discomfort lingers in their eyes, eyes that hold the faintness of tears, of crimson cheeks constantly wiped dry. Of leaving a place that holds so much meaning and emotion, so much hate and love, and most of all, so much diversity. A school whose front doors, open wide for all to enter, hang silent and foreboding in the background of this image. Like warm, gentle hands held out to caress and care for its children. To comfort during times of need. But after this, they will be needed no longer, for these friends will move on and pass through new doors. But it is all hidden behind smiles, because its easier to hide their feelings rather than expose them to the hundreds that join them this day.

Once a group posing for the camera, now they are off in a new world, a new beginning that offers very little time to spend together. Some have moved, others have just become so busy. But it is a memory that will never be forgotten. And when they all look back on this day, it will hurt more than anything, but it will still bring that smile to their lips, and the twinkle in their eye of wanting so much to go back and do it again. For that moment, if only brief, to be together again. But this day marks the ending of old and the beginning of new. For this is an image of a group of closely knit friends prepared to graduate.
