'Blue Rose', 1997. coloured pencil on cardboard. A scribble that turned into something grotesque, yet undeniably interesting to look at. The 'rose' in the title alludes to the woman / she-thing and not the actual rose she is holding. Hence, 'blue rose'. Final verdict: A bit spooky but makes a unique bookmark.

| I like working from photographs. Photos eternally capture an object/subject at a particular angle, in a particular mood. Photos make it seem as if time had been frozen, and never existed. I think many details are lost or go by unnoticed in life, because it's all glances here and there. No one sticks around long enough to take it all in. In the next moment, the previous one is gone forever, and something has been missed...photos immortalise the evanescent glance. They glorify the moment, in all its stillness and beauty. Photos can only show beauty, for everything, I believe, is beautiful once its details can be appreciated. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
'Dani', 2002. Progresso on paper. Dani was a girl I knew in high school. The drawing was inspired by a photo I had taken of her at the year 10 formal. There was just something astounding about the devilish grin which I had caught on camera. I can't explain these things, only that they capture me and don't let go.

It was one of those days when it's a minute away from snowing and there's this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it...and this bag was just dancing with me, like a little kid, begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes... That's the day I realised that there's this entire life...behind things. And this incredibly benevolent force wanted me to know that there was no reason to be afraid - Ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember. I need to remember... Sometimes there's so much beauty...in the world, I feel like I can't take it and my heart is just going to cave in. --- American Beauty

'Dark Sky', 2002. photograph. This was taken in Canberra, near the motel that Shirl and I stayed at. I love the silhouetted tree branches reaching into the sky. The gothic structure in the background is a nice focal point. I think this photo depicts an ominous atmosphere that is nonetheless permeated with a glimmer of hope.

'Freedom', 2001 Oil pastel on paper. Part of the Mercy, Love, Freedom series in my HSC Body of Work.
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
'The Light, Sweet Rain', 2001. mixed media. The concept was based on the idea of rain as a bringer of peace, relief, forgiveness and mercy. The rain falling on the woman symbolises her renewal and the awakening of the senses to the natural world. Here, the drought-ridden central figure is rescued by nature's grace and fuses with the surrounding landscape.

'Sorrow', 2002. Oil Pastels on paper. Sorrow alludes to several characters; one of them obviously being the divine being who is called by that name in Isobelle Carmody's short story, 'The Glory Days'. (From Green Monkey Dreams.) But Sorrow the drawing portrays in parts people that I have known, and that makes him priceless.

I feel that I have no right to look you in the eye...you are but a stranger to me, yet I know such things about you... So when you see me look away, please take no offence, for it is I, who am overwhelmed by the intensity of your eyes; there's so much behind them. You have a face of serenity; it is not a conventionally beautiful face, but that is hardly important when it comes to admiration. In fact, imperfections are better for their idiosyncrasies... This is not infatuation, and it is far more enchanting than a passing crush: O, He who graces this earth, you've certainly mesmerised me.

'Defeat', 2001. acrylic, impasto, sand and shells on canvas. This one was part of my HSC body of work. It complements the 'Light Sweet Rain' series. The figure has thrown itself to the floor in utter exhaustion and defeat.
