| Notes The song title is just a pun, not a wish. The inspiration for this song was following scene: the Army Band (or some military band) was playing one summer evening in a closed-off street in Easton, Maryland before a couple hundred people, most of whom looked like they had just stepped off their yacht after a hard day of downing Martinis. They "all" were sitting back in their lawns chairs, smiling without a care in the world, unaware that they could be just a few clock ticks away from an eternity in the torments of hell. My wife always asks me why I can't sit back and enjoy things--like a movie or the Army Band. Well, they're not real; they're smoke screens that hide the Big Fire and God and eternal things...and the plight of the miserable and oppressed around them. |
| Verse 1: Sitting in the park, bottle in your hand Who knew your final trumpet would be from the Army Band? You were listening to the tuba, you kept rhythm with your feet. At 8:06 p.m. your heart drummed out its final beat Chorus 1: What people do before they die makes me scratch my head. Would this be their final act if they knew they'd soon be dead? Pursuit of earthly pleasures is a race to the infernal A hardening of the heart that blinds you to th'Eternal Verse 2: Tuned in to the plea for cash from Robert Tilton You flip to entertainment news to gawk at Perish Hilton Then watch the pre-game experts chart their bold prognostications Then before you leave for church your soul takes a permanent vacation Chorus 2: What people do before they die makes me scratch my noodle. Would this be their final act if they knew it would be futile? Pursuit of earthly pleasures and all that's oh so tempty A hardening of the heart that only leaves you empty Verse 3: Gathered for Thanksgiving, take a bite from turkey's leg "Don't pig out, think of your gout," you hear your mother beg. The final sounds your ears absorb: a mother's plea that you not get sick Then you're at the judgment throne, clutching a half-chewed drumstick Chorus 3: What people do before they die makes me scratch my bald pate. Would this be their final act if they knew they'd soon be called "late"? Pursuit of earthly treasures is a chasing after the wind A hardening of the heart, never to be forgiven Verse 4: On the thirteenth tee you take a short rest from your golf game "Life is swell, I'm living well," you boastfully exclaim You briefly ponder hungry folks then dismiss them like a joke Aneurysm stops your brain: assessed a penalty stroke Chorus 4: What people do before they die makes me scratch my head in wonder What will be your final act just before you're six feet under? |
