Pot odds can be somewhat of a confusing process but proves very helpful in cash games. Let’s say you have As Ks and the flop comes with 2 more spades. Now, you first must figure out your number of out which can be learned in Hand Odds. Here, your number of outs is 9 so you have about a 36% chance of making your hand.
Now, take the bet which is given to you, let’s say the bet is $10. You add that bet to size of the pot, let’s say it is $90. Here you can call as long as you have 10% to make your hand. That 10% is calculated by dividing the size of the bet by the pot size and the bet added together (10/100). Since your odds are 36% you can afford to call.
Now let’s say the bet
to you is $60. The pot size is still $90 so 90+60= $150. If you use the same
method then you will find that the pot odds are against you (60/150=40%).
Because your odds are only 36% which is less than the pot odds of 40%, you
may consider folding as the cost is too much.
