History of Touch a Truck Day
For the first year, 2005, MOMS Club of Norman-West raised $1,700 for the Children's Section of the Norman Public Library. These were unrestricted funds and importantly not earmarked for books only. The library was able to use these funds to purchase developmentally appropriate toys for pre-readers and to reupholster extremely worn furniture in the children's section. Nearly 500 children attended the event the first year. There were 20 trucks and their operators participating in the first Touch a Truck Day including everything from sanitation trucks from the City of Norman, to a mobile weather satellite truck, and fire engines. The event was such a big success that during the event, people were asking when the event was scheduled for 2006. More importantly, children got the chance to meet the everyday heroes that operate the vehicles and learn more about the work they do for our community. A sanitation worker for the city of Norman said to one of the event volunteers, “In all of my years of working, I never knew I was so appreciated.” In 2006, MOMS Club of Norman-West held the second Touch a Truck Day. The 2006 event was greatly expanded in terms of its size—the event was moved from Reaves Park to the county fair grounds, had nearly 30 trucks (29) and had close to 600 children attend with their parents, guardians or friends. The event raised $3,000 for the library (this is after expenses including promotions, liability insurance, event signage, etc.). These funds were used to replace the story time rug, improve and update the literacy kits, and purchase more developmentally appropriate toys for pre-readers. In 2007, Touch a Truck Day was officially sanctioned as a joint event between MOMS Club of Norman-West and MOMS Club of Norman-East, Oklahoma, meaning that the clubs could jointly plan, promote, staff and receive credit from MOMS Club International for the event. This greatly increased capacity for the event and paid off in the results. Over 1,000 children attended the event accompanied by parents or guardians in 2007, $3,300 was donated to the children's section of the library (after all expenses), and enough money was held in reserve to cover the cost of liability insurance in 2008. The library is still determining how to use the donated funds. |
