Defeating the Weapons
Ruby Weapon Guide
Either equip everyone with these materia, or pick one and kill the others before fighting Ruby.  If you don't then Whirlsand will choose for you. Cast Shield, and Haste if you want to, and cast KOTR immediately after that. If you have HP Absorb attached to your KOTR materia, you will absorb about 8500 per cast. Ruby should already have his claws stuck in the ground now. Every time you finish casting KOTR, he'll use Ultima, and with Shield, you'll often miss it. If you don't, then it will do about 7500 damage, but you'll survive.  Repeat the process and you will get the Desert Rose.
Required People: Cloud, Barret, and Vincent
Required Weapons: Ultima Weapon (or Ragnarok), Missing Score, Death Penalty
Required Armor: Mystile, Dragon Armlet, and Ziedrich
