| The next morning we left on our way to Gaborone (pronounced Haborony). We couldn't find the Gaborone Sun Hotel forever and drove around for at least an hour, after driving about 450 km (280 miles). We went to the casino in the hotel for a while, lost some money, then went to our room, showered and ordered room service for dinner. The next morning when we go to leave the refrigerator in the truck isn't working, so we called around and found a place to fix it. We got there and it worked fine! So, we were off to Khama Rhino Sanctuary, and the start of a terrible day! On the way to Khama Doug got a speeding ticket for going 97 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone. That was 100 Pula, about 18 dollars US. Here is how the speed trap works: one guy is sitting on the side of the road with a stop sign, a camcorder, and radar. He flags you down to pull over, then you walk over to the cop in a car, that is a regular white car, not marked or anything. He tells you what you owe, you pay, he hands you the ticket and that's that. I questioned him about how we know he is the police and he showed us his proof. He had a camera in the car, his car goes to 220, and he had a badge. I was convinced. We didn't get to Khama Rhino Sanctuary until almost dark. We cooked instant soup and Vors (sausage). Doug loves Vors! We showered and went to bed, not to sleep. After only about an hour the wind starts blowing really hard, and is making a hell of a racket. When Doug gets down from the tent to fix the flaps of the tent, he says the refrigerator isn't working again. He turns on the engine of the truck to charge the battery. Then is gets cold outside and starts raining. The tent is wet inside in the morning, plus it's cold and nasty outside. What a night! |

| Back to taday and things are looking much better. We started off wet and cold and drove to the Boma Camp at the Sanctuary to see a Black Rhino they just captured at Chobe National Park. They had him in a Boma and his name is Tchinga, for where he was captured. We talked to the guard and he said that they thought it came in from Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is having a lot of poaching of animals now due to the land situation and starvation of about half of the population. We went to Serowe after seeing Tchinga to the Toyota shop to get a new battery for the fridge. Doug changed the battery out, and it works fine now. It rained all the way to Nata. We stopped several times to give children clothes, toys, and shoes. They are so happy to get things. |
