Right now I am listening to the sounds of music, drumming and singing of a local group who play a few times a day in town. Today when we came by them singing, I noticed one guy had beads on from me. He motioned for me to give the others beads, as I had them around my neck. One by one I gave them each one strand of beads. The people here are very friendly and even when they all crowd around, I do not feel threatened by them.

Zimbabwe is having a really bad famine right now, and also the worst drought in 10 years. More than half of the population is facing starvation, and are starving. Not to mention AIDS. There are 13 million orphans from AIDS in the whole of Africa and growing fast! We didn't see the bad part as we were in the tourist area of Victoria Falls, but they really need help.
I have sponsored a child in Ethiopia through World Vision for 9 years now, and have just requested one from Zimbabwe.
Please help if you can!

This evening we met two men from Germany who are camping here also, seems they just came from Ihaha as well. They told us the elephant with the snare was dead this morning. They said his trunk was cut off and his eyes were pecked out from the birds. It is too bad the park service would not put him out of his misery. As far as I know he suffered in that spot for three days. Who knows how long before then?
Tomorrow we are off to Savuti, more then...

This morning we left early, about 7:00 am. Before we entered Botswana we had to walk, then drive throught the foot and mouth disease dip at the border. You have to get out of the vehicle and walk through it. The lady even sprayed a weaved basket I bought in Zimbabwe with a soda ash solution.
We drove about 70 miles to Savuti on a two track sand road, in 4x4 the whole time. The ride was very bumpy and at times a little scary because we are literally in the middle of the bush with no towns for about 100 miles either way.
We made it to Savuti and saw the first elephants here. They are huge compared to the elephants in Kasane area. In Kasane there were baby and young elephants everywhere. Here the youngest we saw was probably a few years old.
We also saw a pride of about 16 lions, all together at a borhole, where the elephants were drinking. Out of all of them there were only two males, one of them a young cub of probably 1 or 2 years old. The woman at Mababe Gate here said those lions have been here for about three weeks and have killed three elephants already. That is scary to think they can kill something so huge and we are in a tent just about five or six feet off of the ground.

Tomorrow we go to Moremi to camp at North Gate in The Okavango Delta about 90km from here, also on a sand track. More then...
5 Oct. 2002
We are in Moremi Reserve at North Gate camp. Today it took us about 6 1/2 hours to drive 140 km or about 80 miles all day on dirt/sand/mud roads.
