INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Behavior Code

A school is a community. All communities have common goals and ways of ensuring everyone is safe and productive.

MIS operates on the premise that EVERY ACTION HAS A CONSEQUENCE, and that we are all responsible to create an environment conducive to leaning.

Student behavior will be governed by these statements about living and working together.

BE PRODUCTIVE

BE CARING

BE SAFE

BE RESPECTFUL

BE YOUR BEST

More Serious Behavior Issues

Occasionally, the school is faced with some disciplinary issues and it is important that parents and students know our position on these matters, and the consequences which will ensue from infractions. These issues are defined as:

  • Insubordination or showing disrespect towards a teacher or staff member

  • Unexcused absences

  • Cheating on tests, examinations, assignments or homework as well as the plagiarizing of material from secondary sources

  • Fighting, disrupting classes, or damaging school or personal property

  • Conduct seriously endangering the safety of oneself or others

  • Theft and vandalism

  • Smoking on school grounds

  • The use of alcohol at school or coming to a school function under the influence of alcohol

  • The use of, possession of, or sale of drugs on school grounds or at school activities

  • The possession of any object which could be considered a weapon

Consequences of Infractions

Any student who engages in the actions above can expect to be suspended from school for a period based on the seriousness of the issue, or past infractions. No student will be expelled from school without an opportunity to present his/her case to the Director of the school.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS AND STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOR

Students are required to conduct themselves with respect for self and others through their actions, their language and their dress. Student behavior will reflect favorably on the individual and the school, will show consideration for others and will create a harmonious learning atmosphere.

Dress Code

Students are required to dress in appropriate clothing, according to the season. To avoid offence and for safety reasons inappropriate jewelry and clothing is not allowed in school.

General School Rules and Behavioural Guidelines:

5. Students are expected to take care of their working environment and of school property.

6. Fighting, pushing, interfering or endangering another person is not permitted.

Discipline Procedures

All of the staff at the MIRAS schools are committed to encouraging, recognising and supporting an atmosphere of mutual respect, cooperation and understanding. We expect our students to be honest, hard-working and respectful at all times and to be good role models for younger students.

The policy for discipline within the MIRAS International Schools should ensure that all teachers and administrators follow a reasonable, fair and supportive process in ensuring that all students behave in a safe and appropriate manner within our schools.

The school administration is responsible for organizing an efficient system that students are supervised at all times, whether during class/teaching time, or during any of the scheduled breaks and activities that are considered part of the school day.

Teachers who are designated to be on duty at a specific time are, of course, the primary persons responsible in any given situation. However, all teachers and administrators are expected to intervene in any situation that shall be considered unsafe and/or inappropriate.
All teachers and supervisors are responsible for ensuring that students behave in a safe and appropriate manner at all times.

High expectations are expected from MIRAS students, however when intervention procedures are considered necessary the following steps will take place:

  • When a teacher's intervention is sufficient to resolve an issue, no further action need be taken.

  • Repeated inappropriate behaviour will involve the intervention of the class leader or supervisor.

  • A lack of improvement will result in a meeting between the Director, class leader, teacher, parents and student.

  • The Director may recommend a short-term suspension at this point.

  • In serious cases, i.e. instances of violence, theft, use of banned substances or repeated insubordination and lack of respect to teachers a long-term suspension or dismissal may result.

YOUR ROLE AS A PARENT

All Parents are important members of our school community and your role is a vital part in the progress that your child will make at MIRAS school.

We sincerely hope that you will participate as much as you can in all of our activities and we welcome your involvement at all times. In particular, making contact with your child's subject teachers and his/her Class Leader, will ensure that you can keep well informed and also that you can keep the teaching staff informed about any issues relating to the welfare of your child.

MIS students will be more successful in achieving desired outcomes if parents:

1. Help instill student pride, confidence and a positive attitude in their school and their teachers.

2. Support school policies on behavior and attendance.

3. Provide the time and environment for students to complete homework.

4. Encourage students to take responsibility for completion of all homework assignments.

5. Are aware of and communicate to teachers about the level of difficulty students experience with homework.

6. Initiate and encourage discussions with students on local, world or family issues, in a manner that significantly engages students and stimulates thinking.

7. Communicate problems, concerns, and criticisms directly to the appropriate teacher or administrator for clarification or resolution.

8. In so far as possible, take an active role in РТА, volunteer activities, and school events.

9. Share and convey openly and honestly any special problems students have had or are experiencing regarding learning, behavior, emotional problems and changes in the family situation (divorce, separations, death, etc.)

10. Dedicate time and thought to the continual improvement of MIS.

EXPECTATIONS OF YOUR CHILD

HOMEWORK

MIS believes that regular homework is essential for academic achievement. Students in all grades (1-11) can expect to have homework several times a week at the elementary level, and nightly in grades 6-11. We also have study periods and tutorials built into daily schedule so that homework assignments do not become too much of a burden for our students after our long school day.

ATTENDANCE

Students who are regularly present at school make more rapid progress. To complete a year, a student must attend at least 80% of the school days. Please plan family vacations and visits ahead of time to avoid interruptions of your child's learning.

Students are to arrive on campus no later than 08:20 to be ready in class for their first lesson at 08:30. They are to remain in school until 5:00 pm unless specific written permission to leave has been granted. At the completion of the school day transport arrangements must be organised by parents to ensure students vacate the school grounds by 5:10 pm. Under special circumstances students may be involved in extra curricular activities that will require additional time on campus. Prior notice will be given regarding such arrangements.

Student Attendance, Absences, and Lateness

Parents are expected to notify the school if students will be absent: telephone calls are made home if the school is not notified of an absence. Failure to meet the requirements of the program may result in the repetition of a grade, or extra work to complete requirements and further examinations. Absenteeism exceeding 20 % of required attendance without a valid excuse may result in the consequences described above.

Students who arrive late must check-in with the office and receive an admittance slip in order to attend class. Students who are not on time to each class will also be considered late and this information will be recorded in the students' diary.

PROMPTNESS

Please ensure your child is in school on time to begin work at 8:30 am daily. Repeated lateness is disruptive to all concerned and could result in more serious consequences.

QUALITY WORK

All students are expected to make their best effort and produce the highest quality work possible. Excellence is not an option reserved for the best. It is the standard we will all be working toward.

A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

A positive approach to daily work allows a child to maximize learning. We ask parents to join us in creating an enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, and to reinforce learning at home.

BE PREPARED AT ALL TIMES

Students should bring pencils, pens, paper, books and other equipment such as rulers and calculators, to school as needed. Parents can assist by helping children to make lists, teaching them to check their school bags each morning before leaving for school, checking that their homework assignment books are up to date, etc.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS

It is expected that students will arrive punctually to class equipped with all necessary classroom materials. Assignments are to be submitted on time and if handed in late, without any valid reason or advanced permission, may result in a reduction of grades.

Cheating in any form is not acceptable at MIRAS. This includes plagiarizing, copying, and use of the Internet without citing references.

HOMEWORK AND INDEPENDENT STUDY

Homework and Independent Study are very important aspects of the learning process. It not only helps progress at school and involves parents in what their children are doing at school, but it also encourages self-discipline, initiative and research skills. During Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 4:00-5:00 pm, time maybe spent on homework during the supervised academic preparation period. The minimum time students at different grade levels are expected to spend on their homework each day:

Grades 5-8 - Students receive one hour and thirty minutes of homework each evening.

Grades 9-10 - Students receive two hours of homework each evening.

Grade 11 - Students receive two and a half hours of homework each evening.

LOST AND FOUND

The school does not take responsibility for any personal property that is lost, stolen, or damaged. It is strongly recommended that students don't bring valuable items to school.

MOBILE PHONES

The school does not take responsibility for mobile phones that are lost, stolen, or damaged. Whilst we recognise that mobile phones may be important for parents and students to communicate, they are not to be used during class tune, or while classes are in session, i.e. until 5:00 pm. Mobile phones will be confiscated if they are used during the school day for any purpose, as they are highly disruptive to the educational process.

If you wish to send a message to your child, please contact the administration of the school.

REPORTS AND PROGRESS

Report Cards

Your child will receive a written report card three times during the year (see School Calendar for exact dates).

MIS utilizes a continuous assessment approach, which means that all homework, classwork, projects, test and other exhibitions of learning will be reflected in each written report.

Progress Reports

Interim Progress reports are sent home each mid term for students who are not showing progress or at risk of not successfully completing the year.

Parent - Teacher Conferences

Formal Parent-Teacher Conferences

These are scheduled three times per year. Parents may speak to each of their child's teachers at any time with a reasonable amount of notice. Teachers may also request appointments with parents.

Informal Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parents are encouraged to call and schedule meetings when they have any concern at all regarding their child's progress. Teachers will also initiate parent meetings whenever they see serious problems developing in a student's attitude, work habit, or work products.

Interim Reports

Occasionally an additional report may be required to gather data about a particular issue or problem. This report may be at the request of the parent, any one of the student's teachers, or the Administration.

Grading Policy

The grading policy for MIS is designed to cater for and meet the requirements of the Kazakh National curriculum and the International Baccalaureate program. These are explained in detail with each report issued.
