Perhaps, it could be said that MIRD
was born out of the initiative of former United Nations
Volunteer-Community Development Specialists who reached the
maximum term limit of five years while working in the
Government of the Philippines-United Nations Multi-Donor
Programme (GOP-UN MDP). Assigned in the island provinces of
Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Zamboanga areas, these volunteers
seriously thought of how to sustain the various peace and
development efforts after the termination of their
contracts. Challenged by the many tasks left undone, these
NUNVs who are registered social workers with extensive
experience in community development work, converged in a
commitment to continue the Multi-Donor Program initiative.
This happened sometime during
the early months of year 2000.
What motivated
these volunteers to continue the efforts was their
dedication to be with those they've served. Work did not
end with the termination of their posts. In fact, the
demand for assistance in the form of various
capability-building services heightened as the over-all
peace and development interventions in these areas became
massive. The ever-increasing visits of people they've
worked with simply called for the maintenance of the spirit
of voluntarism which generally characterized the very nature
of their work.
People they trained and who in the process gained the
knowledge and skills in development work long for more
knowledge and skill to be truly effective volunteers. Hence,
the need to carry out the usual development work - rendering
various forms of assistance service - developing and
enhancing facilitation skills, technical skills in social
preparation and project development, and developing a
generation of new and more dynamic volunteers who are more
equipped to respond to the needs of the communities. All
these efforts simply turned as inspiring sacred services.
After over a
period of three years, engaged in the delivery of various
services to the many communities in partnership with MDP and
other service providers in the Western Mindanao region,
efforts finally led to the formal institutionalization of MIRD's development efforts. In August 2003, the Mindanao
Integrated Resource Development, Incorporated was formally
registered in the Securities and Exchange Commission.
