I'd had the basic idea for this camp since the beginning, but had been planning on doing a sculpey stone wall instead of a palisade. I guess I was shooting for a Hadrian's Wall many years after kind of look. I changed my mind and decided to go with a palisade to make it more generic.
The base is styrene plastic, as usual. I built up the hills on either side by using progressively smaller half ovals of craft foam. This gave it a stepped hill approach that you often see people use for miniatures terrain. Then I cut tiny squares with an X-acto knife to place the palisade posts in. The gateposts are wooden dowels, while the palisades themselvses are Craft Stix from Hobby Lobby. Both were shaped by whittling them to a point with an X-acto knife. I put a dab of epoxy in the hole I cut and forced the post down. The craft foam around the bottom edges helps support the posts, too.
The gate was made of more craft stix lined up side to side, with another crossbar stick epoxied across them. The guard is a medieval welshman from Feudal Castings, while the 15mm sheep is from Peter Pig. After they were glued into place, I coated the stepped hill with a pastelike mixture of white glue and Woodland Scenics Earth flocking.
This was intended to be a generic Dark Ages/Medieval camp, and I thought it turned out pretty well. The slopes add to the defensive look of the palisade.
This camp was sold at Cold Wars for $25.
