Buddha on Hill

Buddha on Hill

This camp was inspired by my trips to Asia where you can often find bronze or gold Buddhas atop a hill, with stairs leading up. The Buddha was part of a set of six I picked up in Myanmar. Working with the maximum DBA camp sizes, I didn't have a room for a huge, towering hill, and had to settle for a small knoll instead. The base is styrene plastic, with the hill built up from successive layers of "Craft Foam" and the (brass?) Buddha glued to the top level. The stairs were constructed with bass wood and a notch was cut into the foam to "slide the stairs into." I coated the hill with a mix of white glue and Woodland Scenics brown "Turf" to give it a smooth rather than stepped look.

The civilians and monk are converted from the Feudal Castings "Oriental Peasants" bag. I removed their weapons (or converted the spear into a post in one case), and contorted the heck out of one to make him a kneeling monk. The posts for the palisade the workers are constructing is made of wood "Craft Stix" from Hobby Lobby. I glued a strip of craft foam onto the styrene, then cut out tiny square "post holes" to squeeze the posts into. This gives it more grip, anchored by epoxy, support of the foam around it, and successive layers of paint and clearcoat.

I liked how this one came out, and it gives a nice little vignette...the workers pausing to watch the monk at his devotions...the army including the shrine in the circuit of its fortifications. This could probably be used by virtually any Asian army, especially those where Buddhism spread.
