ON MY MIND

There's no censoring brainy
beauty Lara Fabregas as she
speaks her mind about the
importance of telling the truth.

Censorship has been around for a long
time and is welded by those in power. The
regular schmuck never really had the right

to decide what was good for him as an individual. It is the special schmuck that makes the decisions. There are basically two institutions that are big on censorship -one is religion, the other is government. Government and religion have always had the compulsion to exert control over the population by controlling the access to education. Keep the masses ignorant and it will be easier to handle them. He who controls information controls the world. Publications, movies, television programs, and other forms of mass communication are examined and material that is judged to be obscene, libelous, politically objectionable, is removed. So far so good, censorship appears to be a noble effort to rid society of matters that harm it (equivalent to putting criminals in prison). But you see, a novel written about a rapist is not a crime and if one reader suddenly goes nuts and rapes someone, you can't blame the novel.
We live in the 21st century and disillusion in religion, inter-racial marriage, divorce, living-in, contraceptives, abortion, casual sex, ecstasy, the internet- these things exist. We can't deny them. Anyone who believes that he can stop people from
knowing about these things is simply deluded. The censor claims to be the supervisor of public morals and he sees the world the way he believes it should be and not for what is actually is. To dictate to others what should and shouldn't be is presumptuous and is conceit at its worst-and that would really be creating our won safe reality apart from the one that is actually there. You might say it's right to erase what is detrimental to society, but the thing is, you cannot correct something by deleting it. You can't stop people from having sex by not mentioning sex. Now what about gratuitous beaver shots? Well, a beaver is a beaver and, if you weren't so scandalized by it, it might actually lose its 'evil' powers. To a certain extent, censorship even works against itself. You may as well be saying, "Hey, check out this rotten thing; it'll blow your mind." Why else do people flock to what is banned? It is intriguing and people love intrigue. The censor doesn't seem to understand this.
Censors will always be fighting a losing battle because they pit themselves against the grain of basic human nature. Censorship is not progressive and nature
does not work to regress. Nature works to better a species. Nature chooses the right chromosomes but it needs to be able to select from a multitude of traits in order to create the ideal. We are supposed to allow ourselves to be exposed to factors that will lead to our development. The more choices we have, the bigger our awareness and the more capable we are of making the 'right' decisions. Humanity has progressed thus far because we are a naturally curious species with the need to question 'God-given' truths. We live in a world teeming with information. We must open our eyes and deal with what exists.
Anyone with enough sense knows the non sense of censorship because it all boils down to one word in the end: Truth. Truth cannot be swept under the carpet for long; it always manage to escape into the world. Censors cannot imprison it. The truth may not always be a comfor-table thing but it's certainly so much better than being blindfolded with duct tape over our mouths. We may not like what is happening out there but I'll have it any day over repression, suppression & hypocrisy.
