Maverick's Flight Helmet

(Status: Parts Collection)

Maverick holding his flight helmetWhilst hunting for an elusive ‘rams horn’ APH6 suitable for using as the base of an X-wing fighter helmet I learnt more than I had intended about flight helmets. A craving began for a more modern flight helmet as used by US fighter-jocks conspicuous in the movie 'Top Gun'. I stumbled across a cheap, battle scarred PRK-37/P project helmet suitable for this project on eBay.

This helmet had been dropped and cracked and was devoid of any hardware or electronics bar the visor and visor cover which accounted for the low price of $36. It is perfect to be stripped and kitted out for display and for a sim-jock. It currently languishes, neglected in my closet but I hope to begin this project in the Summer of 2001.

I bought the correct cast oxygen mask receivers from eBay too for $29, a lock knob for $10 and a dark visor for $15. I also need the following from Check Six Aviation;

  • HGUP-092: V-Tech helmet liner - $12
