I have been taking music lessons since I was 7 years old. I took two years of piano lessons with a family friend, and then switched to lessons at The Music Cellar, a company that offers lessons on piano, guitar, bass, drums and percussion. The company was originally run out of the basement of Brenda and David Schneider's home, but has since moved to a new, larger location.
I started taking lessons there in about 1991, and only stopped when I left the city. Over the years, I played all kinds of music and became friends with my piano teacher.
As part of the lessons from the Music Cellar, all students participate in the end-of-year concerts that feature bands made up of groups of students of similar age and ability.
In grade 9, I started band and learned to play the trombone. I participated in concert band for all four years of high school, and played in various school jazz ensembles for three and a half of them.
The bands I played in during high school did several trips: to Saskatoon for Unifest in 1996, to Chicago in 1998, to Calgary and Banff in 1999, and to Brandon for the Brandon International Jazz Festival in 1997, 1998, and 1999.
I have many happy memories from my time with these ensembles, and plan to add pictures to this section as soon as they are once again available to me.
I joined the UW Downtown Jazz in 1999, and played with them until 2007. For more about the administrative and leadership activities that I participated in as a member of the band, please follow this link.
The band made a recording in the Spring of 2002. To listen to some of the tracks we recorded, follow the links below. Please note that these require the use of MediaPlayer or similar audio program, as they are .wma files.
