Languages

What do I know about languages and how good are my language abilities? Well, I can speak fluently in English, which is useful, since I do actually live in England. Other than that, I know a little French from GCSE but I think I’m pretty hopeless. Je ne comprends pas les conversations des rues français. Je déteste parler français! I actually don’t really like it any more. Maybe I’m just an anti-French bastard like half of Britain. I try to learn German as much as possible Many people don’t like German. Most people probably, rather ridiculously, think they will sound like a Nazi officer shouting commands at people. “Halt!”, “Wir hassen England! Es ist Scheiße!”. But I don't mind it. It’s pretty strongly related to English, and it’s interesting to see just how similar some words are. By the way, Germans are NOT Nazis!, although they can be It's also NOT true that Germans are ALWAYS efficient and ALWAYS on time.

I’ve also learnt some Polish… Kraków jest bardzo dobre miasto ale Warszawa jest okropna. Chciałbym mieć prezerwatywa. Don’t say this in Warsaw, especially to an elderly catholic, because it means: “Krakow is a very good town but Warsaw is terrible. I would like to have a condom”.

I did know a few phrases and words in Korean, Russian, Hungarian, maybe Slovak, but I'm not really bothered now. I don’t claim to speak French, German or Polish, let alone any of these others I’ve mentioned.

Here are some of my pages relating to languages. You may also like my Alphabet section. But don't expect anything amazing and don't expect to be able to pronounce the phrases without further reference. This is only supposed to give you an idea of the languages, not to be a definitive guide. The pages are also not exactly completed yet, as I don't really give vast amounts of time to making web pages. A slightly more useful website about languages is at www.bbc.co.uk/languages , but even that is not very extensive. When I find some good general language sites, I'll post them on this page.
