Combat

20s and 1s
For the purpose of resolving attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws, a natural 20 is treated as a roll of 30.

There are no automatic successes or failures. A natural 1 is treated as a roll of -10. All modifiers are applied as normal; if a character fails to hit the target AC or DC with a base roll of 30, he still fails. If a character is still able to hit the target AC or DC with a base roll of -10, then he succeeds.

Critical Hits and Spells
A spellcaster rolling a critical hit on an attack spell ads an additional die of damage.

Critical Fumbles
This is the critical fumble system that I have been using for the last dozen or so sessions. I post it here so that you can evaluate and discuss. So far the PCs have used it against enemies, but it has not been applied to the PCs. If you do not like this system, or would like to revise it in some way, I'm open to discussion.

Upon a role of a natural 1 on an attack roll, the attack has resulted in a possible fumble. Just as in a critical threat, the attacker must roll a second attack roll. If the second attack roll is successful (ie, equals or exceeds the target's AC), then the attack is a normal miss. If the attacker misses on the second roll, then he has critically fumbled. Roll on the following table to determine the result.

Roll               Fumble

1                   Opponent may take a 5-foot step out of his normal turn
2                   Opponent may make an unarmed strike
3                   Opponent may make a non-lethal attack (at the standard penalty for making a subdual strike with a weapon)
4                   Opponent may make a grapple attempt
5                   Opponent may make an overrun attempt
6                   Opponent may make a feint attempt
7                   Opponent may make a disarm attempt
8                   Opponent may make a bull rush attempt
9                   Opponent may make a sunder attempt
10                 Opponent may make a trip attempt

All of these possible results are free actions, and may be attempted even if the opponent has already made an attack of opportunity and another free action that round. The fumbler may not make an attack of opportunity, even if the opponent does not have the appropriate feat to perform the indicated action without provoking an attack of opportunity. In addition, if an opponent fails a Trip attempt, the fumbler may not try to trip him in return.
