One of my favorite singers is the man pictured at the left. Don Williams has a unique sound that not only attracts fans of country music but also of rock and roll. One of his biggest fans is rock legend Eric Clapton.
Don Williams
Eric Clapton was directly influenced by Don Williams and has even sang some of Don's songs, such as "Tulsa Time."

Don Williams used to play shows without any alcoholic beverages allowed. He wanted people to enjoy his music without getting drunk while listening to it.
Don Williams started out with a group called the Pozo Seco Singers in the 1960's. I recently acquired the first Pozo Seco Singers' album Time.
Don Williams, like Tom T. Hall, remains a favorite in my family.

Ray Wylie Hubbard
Ray Wylie Hubbard is a songwriter and singer that I have actually seen live. I got to see him at the Bois D' Arc Bash in Commerce, Texas last fall. It was the best free concert that I have ever been to.
My roommate, Eric, was the one who told me about Ray Wylie Hubbard and played the song "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother" for me. He had it on an old Jerry Jeff Walker record called "Viva Terlingua."
Just when everybody thought that he was done, he played a couple of more songs. Too bad for the people who thought he was done. They missed the end of the concert because they left too soon.

Sixpence None The Richer
Sixpence None The Richer is my favorite alternative group. Two of the members (Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum) are from a town in Texas located near San Antonio. The group started out singing in church and they have continued with an untraditional Christian sound. They got their name from a passage in a book by C.S. Lewis.
I have the self titled album by Sixpence on CD and I received the limited edition vinyl version of that album for Christmas from my parents. I have played it a few times on the turntable, but I usually play the CD version so that I don't have to worry about scratching the vinyl version.

This is a picture of Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum. The group Sixpence None The Richer emerged on the pop/ alternative scene with the song "Kiss Me." Later they released another single called "There She Goes." That song was a remake and had been done before Sixpence got it, although, Sixpence made it a hit.
I enjoy listening to this group very much. I hope to one day see them in concert. Maybe they will come to Dallas and I will be able to see them live.
But Paul McCartney may come to Dallas before Sixpence, and I told Steve that we would go to see Paul McCartney if he ever came to town. I guess I will just have to see what happens.

Here is a picture of Ray Wylie Hubbard with Country legend Willie Nelson. Both of these musicians are considered "Outlaws." They both do their own brand of country music and have had limited success because of that.
With any luck, I'll get to see Ray Wylie Hubbard in a live concert and maybe even get the poster that Eric stole for our dorm room autographed.

Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac is a rock group that originated in England. They were originally an English Blues band. In the 1970s, they came to America. They added two new American members, Stevie (Stephanie) Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.
With the addition of Stevie and Lindsey, the group found much success. The success continued despite a love triangle involving Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Mick Fleetwood.
In 1987, Lindsey Buckingham left Fleetwood Mac to embark on a solo career. Stevie Nicks maintained a successful solo career as well as being a member and lead singer of Fleetwood Mac.
In 1981, Stevie Nicks began a solo career so that she could get more of the songs she wrote on albums.

The hardest time for Fleetwood Mac was during the making of the Rumours album. They were all going through difficulties. Stevie was cheating on Lindsey (her boyfriend) with Mick who was cheating on his wife. The Rumours album sold more than 25 million copies.
In 1997, the group came back together to do a concert called The Dance. It was the first time that Lindsey had been with the group since 1993 when President Bill Clinton was inaugurated into the office of President of the United States. Fleetwood Mac officially broke up in 1987.
The members pictured in the picture to the right from left to right are: Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine Perfect McVie, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie. John McVie was married to Christine for a short time and then they divorced

Merle Haggard
![]() |
Merle Haggard remains a favorite in my family. I started listening to Merle when I was like 14 or 15. I thought he was pretty cool then, and I still feel that way.
I think it is pretty cool how he turned his life around. When he was a teenager, he stole a car. He was in prison at San Quentin in California. He began a country music career in the early 1960s.
While Ronald Reagan was governor of California, Merle was pardoned for the crimes he had committed.
Many of the songs that Merle wrote are from the point of a view of a former prisoner or prison escapee. In the 1970s, most male country singers were trying to imitate the sound that Merle had, but with very little success. Few were successful at sounding like Merle Haggard. Unfortunately, there is no official Merle Haggard website.
Emmylou Harris
Emmylou Harris has become one of my favorite country or folk singers. She has had a long career in music. She has stuck to her country roots the entire time.
She started out working with former Byrd and Flying Burrito Brother, Gram Parsons in the early 1970s. It was really all thanks to Gram Parsons that Harris's career took off. Unfortunately, Gram Parsons was found dead in his motel room at the Joshua Tree Inn in California in 1972.
Emmylou Harris was privileged to do a song with The Band in their final concert known as The Last Waltz on Thanksgiving Day in 1976.
Emmylou Harris has gone on to make several videos of her songs and a whole bunch of albums. Her career is so extensive that her music has been available on 8-track tape, vinyl, cassette tape, and Compact Discs.
During the mid and late 1980s she formed the Trio with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. The Trio reunited for a second album in the late 1990s. That album was called Trio II.
Despite hardships in her personal life, Harris has remained a favorite musician of mine and has been successful. She gave birth early in her career and went through a divorce early in the career.
Harris continues to sing and she is always working on some kind of project. To find out more about her click on the pictures of her.
