	e Moyen ge et la Renaissance n'étaient des périodes agréables ni pour les sorcières ni pour les femmes. L'hystérie de la poursuite aux sorcières, et le mauvais statut dans lequel les femmes se trouvaient, nous font apprécier les libertés dont nous jouissons aujourd'hui. L'aptitude des humains à agir de la manière décrite ci-dessus est bouleversante et effroyable. De Montaigne l'a bien exprimé en ces termes: "Men put greater faith in those things that they do not understand" (335). Russell est d'accord: "Why were witches singled out for a more total and hysterical hatred than any of the other outcasts of Christian society? Perhaps because, unlike Jews, lepers, or out-of-favor politicians, they were not physically identifiable, so that the number upon whom guilt and fear could be projected was almost unlimited" (269).
