Chiana arrived on Moya part way through the escaped prisoner's journey, during the episode Durka Returns. She came aboard as a prisoner of her own species, the Nebari, who were planning to mentally cleanse her. A process taking 100 cycles, the brainwashing technique would have eradicated all of Chiana's free spirit. During the episode, Durka, working for the Nebari, goes insane, and in the resulting chaos, Chiana is set free, and is allowed to stay aboard Moya.
Though at first Chiana found it hard to settle, she became a valued member of the crew after time. Initially she wouldn't watch anyone's back except her own, something she had learned during her years rebelling against the Nebari homeworld. However, after time, she began to care for her crewmates, and soon began helping as much as the other crew. A major turning point for her though was the beginning of her relationship with D'Argo, which is first seen at the beginning of season 2, and grows rapidly after the events of Out Of Their Minds when the pair inhabit eachother's bodies for a short time.

Never one for settling down, Chiana finds it hard to think what the future may hold with D'Argo, and when she learns of his plans to settle down and live on a farm at the end of season 2, she begins to panic, and starts to self-destruct by sleeping with D'Argo's newly found son, Jothee. Though the relationship ends soon after, D'Argo and Chiana remain friends, and in fact, at the end of season 4, they become partners once more. Perhaps this time, now that Chiana is more mature, the pair might have a future together.

Another major plotline for Chiana involves her brother, Nerri. The leader of the Nebari resistance, Chiana believes him dead during Taking The Stone, when the life disc she has inside her ceases to function. However, she later learns in A Clockwork Nebari that her brother is actually alive and continuing the fight. The resistance had needed Chiana to believe him dead for protection, but during the episode, a nebari close to Nerri was able to reveal the truth to Chiana.

Brother and sister had been through a lot in the past having been part of a Nebari plan to rule large parts of the galaxy. Nebari ships are already capable of inflicting massive damage (for example the loss of the Zelbinion in PK Tech Girl), but the species decided to implement another plan, involving all those who don't conform to their society. Chiana, her brother, and many like them, were infected with a virus created by the Nebari to be spread by the outcasts to all neighbouring worlds. Chiana and Nerri came through it, and with the resistance movement growing, perhaps the Nebari can be stopped.
Later in Chiana's journey, her path changes greatly when she is temporarily inhabited by an energy rider during the episode Losing Time. After the experience she is left with the ability to see the future, and slow down time. Her future flashes become more and more useful as she learns to interpret them, and the crew are able to avert several disasters. The ability to slow time however leaves her blind, temporarily, but for longer amounts of time with each usage. Her future with D'Argo seems bright, and her new powers useful, but will she be able to keep the balance, and prevent a total loss of sight?
