Mission Statement

Literacy Volunteers of America is a non-profit organization which provides a variety of services to help people achieve personal goals though literacy.

We believe that the ability to read is essential, not only for personal growth but also for individual freedom and the preservation of a democratic society. The ability to read is important for informed citizens and democracy cannot long endue without an informed citizenry.

We believe that literacy becomes increasingly important to the individual and to society as our culture becomes more complex and dependent on technology. We believe that in such a culture literacy is basic to achievement of one's potential and to the survival of our nation.

We consider it our mission to:
bulletFoster and enhance literacy through the efforts of a corps of LVA trained volunteer tutors who assist adults functioning at the lowest literacy levels
bulletFurther proficiency in English as a second language for those who wish it
bulletProvide services free of charge
bulletAll in an effort to stay the rising tide of illiteracy and improve the quality of life in Sullivan County.
