Connie Keller, Board President

Literacy Volunteers/Sullivan County has grown so much...almost beyond my expectations. Our county outreach program continues and has met with encouraging results. Our outreach to ESL students has been a tremendous success!

We have come a long way since 1994. Not too long ago we were desperate to find students and now we are desperate for tutors.

Our mission is to provide adults with the literacy skills necessary to participate in the opportunities that the United States has to offer. Without tutors, we cannot fulfill our mission. They are the requisite for the success of Literacy Volunteers. With so many worthwhile organizations that depend on volunteers, it is a challenge to continue to recruit tutors-volunteers for literacy.

Our most important goal is the communication of our need for volunteer tutors to the community of Sullivan County. We currently publicize our need for tutors, publicize tutor trainings and speak to groups about volunteering for LVA/SC. This does not seem to be enough.

As president I am asking every LVA/SC volunteer to become involved in the effort to recruit tutors. Whether you are a board member, associate board member, tutor, bookstore volunteer, student or supporter of LVA/SC in any manner...YOU CAN HELP.

Please talk to your friends and members of other organizations to which you may belong about the mission and needs of LVA/SC. Each of you is really an ambassador for Literacy. As much as we utilize the media to increase awareness of our mission and our present needs, NOTHING COMPARES TO THE POWER OF A PERSONAL MESSAGE from our volunteers and supporters.

Take the time to talk about your experience with LVA/SC and our mission. You might be surprised by how many people are unaware of the literacy needs of our community, unaware of the existence of LVA/SC, unaware of our mission.

You are important to the future of LVA/SC. You personally have the power to help LVA/SC accomplish its mission. Speak to people you know about us. You will find out how great an ambassador you can be! The more you do this, the more you will find that you enjoy it and that people are interested in hearing about your experience and the information you have to share.

We need you to participate!!! The future of Literacy Volunteer of Sullivan County depends on all of us!
