Due to the unavailability of spare parts to repair the many RX-79[G] Gundam Mass Production Ground Type units (they themselves were made of spare parts), Federation engineers were forced to improvise with what they had. When Shiro Amada's Gundam MPGT was damaged in the battle with the Apsalus II, the unit was upgraded to the Ez8 (short for "Extra 08 [Zero-Eight]"). The unit was completely redesigned (except for the storage rack, Beam Sabers and the ability to use the standard hand armaments) and had more overall armor. The Ez8 was returned to combat, guarding a unit of RX-75 Guntank Mass Production Type. Although the mission failed, the Ez8 was damaged protecting the last MPT Guntank and later single handedly destroyed the Apsalus III.
