Ludo was born in the summer of 2000 in St. Louis, MO when singer/guitarist Andrew Volpe began playing with guitarist Tim Ferrell. The two wrote songs and played the occasional show with a rotating cast of other musicians while home on breaks from college. The shows were small and infrequent, but the soaring melodies, unique harmonies, and personal, yet humorous lyrics of their songs always struck a chord with audiences. Eager to share their music with the masses, the band hit the road in the spring of 2003 as a two-piece. They played acoustic shows with only one rule: play every night. Rock clubs, community centers, and open mics-a-plenty, the two played from Houston to New York and Orlando to Milwaukee, armed only with guitars, two ferrets, and a 3-song Do-It-Yourself EP. We just wanted to play. We didn't care where or for whom, says Volpe. They ended up playing over 70 shows in over 30 different cities. While on the road, Ludo's new-found fans demanded to know when the full-length album was coming out and when touring would begin with the rest of the band. We just started telling people that we'd be recording over the summer and touring with the full band in the fall. We had no idea how to make both of those things happen, but it had to be done playing these songs on an acoustic guitar was driving me crazy, says Ferrell. While still touring the band invited Ferrell's former band mate Tim Convy to join them on the road. After just a few weeks Convy joined the band full-time on keyboards and the three began searching for a rhythm section. Having spent all that time on the road they had seen a wealth of musical talent across the country and knew just what they were looking for. Soon, Ludo had their players: on bass, Marshall Fanciullo from the band Caenum (part of the thriving Omaha, NE music scene), and on drums, Matt Palermo of Houston, TX hardcore favorites Corah. Palermo's hardcore chops brought a dynamic power to the songs that was rarely heard in the pop rock world, while Fanciullo's signature sound immediately gelled the songs and sealed the gaps. Ludo entered the studio in St. Louis that summer with producer Jim Callahan. Eleven songs were chosen for the record, ranging in theme from unrequited love to social isolation to high school mythology. All are united by clever, engaging, often hilarious lyrics and the band's unique story-telling ability. You wouldn't think that heavy-metal guitars and '50's-influenced pop songs could appear on the same record, much less the same song, but it's the seamless marriage of these two characteristics that sets Ludo apart from its peers, says Jake Leonard of The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Badger Herald. It's the aggressive playing, the catchy melodies, and the fun lyrics that Leonard says, can make you actually bang your head, tap your foot, and laugh hysterically all at the same time. After the studio the band was anxious to play live and deliver the songs as a 5-piece for the first time. On the strength of the acoustic performances the band earned a spot at The Midwest Music Summit in Indianapolis. They played their first show ever on August 8th at the summit, which featured hundreds of bands from all over the country. That was just the beginning. Since the release of the album in late August the band has toured full-time from Texas to New York and has shared the stage with such acts as Motion City Soundtrack, The Big Wu, Longwave, Blessid Union of Souls, and Reel Big Fish to name a few. Their song, Hum Along has been featured on college radio stations throughout the Midwest as well as several major commercial stations including 101.1 The River in St. Louis. Adhering to their goal of entertaining people without making them dumber, Ludo plans to continue their rapid rise to the top with hard work, stellar songs, and a never-ending tour.
