Livestock
Raising healthy and profitable livestock is a huge part of Harvest Moon 64. The following will give basic instructions on raising your dog, your horse, cows, sheep, and chickens. Cows, your horse, and your dog can be displayed at festivals and races, while chickens and sheep are merely profitable. Because the game focuses more on cows than on sheep, this page will do the same.

Dog

The dog is yours right from the beginning. The sweet mutt comes from your grandfathers days with the living, and comes with his land. You have no obligations to your grandfathers dog. You name it, and that can be all. However, if you want to be responible pet owner, it would be best to at least take the dog in at night and on rainy days. If you want to run your dog in the village dog races on Winter 19th, a winning dog must be fed and outside every nice day, and must receive exercise. Your dog will eat anything. Mushrooms, fish, berries, turnips: he likes em all. Equip a food item, stand next to the pups dish, and press A. To exercise him, blow the dog whistle and run around so that he runs too. You do not have control over the dog when it comes time to race.
Horse

The horse becomes yours the first time you visit Green Ranch. He is Cliffs little brother, and a beautiful pony. The first thing you can do to make your pony a healthy horse is to purchase a brush from Ricks tool shop. Brush and talk to your pony every day for about twenty days, until he becomes a horse. After he is a horse, you can ride him around your farm, and use him as a shipping bin (this is helpful for crops far away from the shipping bin). Brush your adult horse and ride him every day to be successful in the village horse races. The horse races are on Spring 17th and Fall 28th. When racing, you must repeatedly press A to make your horse go. The horses stamina is the result of how well you took care of the horse.
Cows

Cows are not free. They do not come with your farm, and no one gives them away. This is highly unfortunate. Cows are sold at the Green Ranch for 6,000g each. To impregnate a cow, it costs 3,000g. When you purchase a cow, it is in its second stage of growth out of three stages. When you impregnate a cow, it is in is first stage of growth out of three stages.
Cows must be fed, brushed, talked to, and milked (if they are in the third stage of growth, adulthood) every day. If the weather is nice and you have fully matured grass, let your cows out into a fenced pasture. Every morning a piece of fodder will be gone from the field. When there is no more mature grass in your pasture or a rainy day is approaching, bring your cows into the stables. In the stables, one piece of fodder per cow must be placed into the cows appropriate stall (stalls may be read by standing next to one and pressing A). To milk a cow, you must have purchased the milker from Ricks tool shop. With the milker equipped, stand next to the cow you want to milk and press B. To brush a cow, equip the brush (also available from Ricks tool shop) and press B whilst standing next to a cow. To impregnate a cow, you must purchase the prenancy potion from the Green Ranch. Equip the potion, stand next to your cow of choice, and press B. Pregnant cows are fed in the pregnancy stall. If a cow gets sick, you must purchase medicine from the Green Ranch. Equip the medicine, stand next to the sick cow, and press B.
Sheep

Sheep are not free. They do not come with your farm, and no one gives them away. This is highly unfortunate. Sheep are sold at the Green Ranch for 4,000g each. When you purchase a lamb, it is in its first stage of growth out of two stages.
Sheep must be fed, brushed, talked to, and sheered (if they are in the second stage of growth, adulthood) every day. If the weather is nice and you have fully matured grass, let your sheep out into a fenced pasture. Every morning a piece of fodder will be gone from the field. When there is no more mature grass in your pasture or a rainy day is approaching, bring your sheep into the stables. In the stables, one piece of fodder per lamb must be placed into the lambs appropriate stall (stalls may be read by standing next to one and pressing A). To shear a sheep, you must have purchased the shearer from Ricks tool shop. With the shearer equipped, stand next to the lamb you want to shear and press B. To brush a lamb, equip the brush (also available from Ricks tool shop) and press B whilst standing next to a lamb. If a lamb gets sick, you must purchase medicine from the Green Ranch. Equip the medicine, stand next to the sick lamb, and press B.
Chickens

Chickens are not free. They do not come with your farm, and no one gives them away. This is highly unfortunate. Chickens are sold at the Green Ranch for 1,500g each. They can be sold back to the ranch for 500g each. Chickens lay one egg each day that can be sold for 75g. Eggs can also be incubated in the incubator in the chicken coop. It takes three days to incubate and egg into a chick. Chicks do not lay eggs and cannot be sold until they have matured into chickens. Chickens must be kept in a fenced area on nice day. They do not require fodder or chicken feed when outside. For rainy days, chickens must be kept indoors. They must be fed with chicken feed when indoors, purchased at the Green Ranch for 10g a meal. Typhoons kill chickens that are not in the coop!
