"Perhaps That Was His Secret"
It has been my privilege, to have known Dr. J.R. Boyd for over 40 years. We used to listen to his radio program from CJKL Kirkland Lake which he started in 1943. He called it "The Bible Lovers' Fellowship." In later years on some occasions when the taped message failed to arrive in time, he would phone me and ask if I could drive to Kirkland Lake and conduct the program "live" on a Sunday morning, which I was glad to do.
I met him personally in the 1950's when he brought some of his fine poultry and exhibited them at the New Liskeard Fall Fair. I was also exhibiting at the same time. I recall that he showed various breeds such as Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, and even a Blue Andalusian on one occasion. He told me that the prize money he received helped him with his travelling expenses, while he was visiting his many friends contacted by radio......
I was always amazed at how much Dr. Boyd accomplished for he was never in a hurry. He said to me one day, "It is amazing how much you" can get done in a day as long as you keep going. " Perhaps that was his secret.
We must give Dr. Boyd credit for getting us started at Thornloe. There were three Sunday Schools that were ongoing when he arrived on the scene, but he encouraged us to organize. The church was first known as the the Heaslip-McCool Baptist Church. We didn't own a building, but we did own ; 2 acre lot on the highway near Thornloe. In 1958 he helped us greatly in the planning and building of a small church that would seat about 100 people. Because of the new location it was named Thornloe Crossroads Baptist Church, and with help from Mr. Boyd's Extension Fund and a great deal of volunteer labour from Sudbury, Lavigne, Thornloe, and Englehart, we were able to dedicate the new building December 14. 1958. Since that time we have been able to add two additions that improved the facilities, and my son Keith is the present pastor. It was Dr. Boyd's foresight and planning that established the work directly in the centre of the district, and right on Highway 11. It has always been a joy to have him come back and preach at an Anniversary or other occasion, and he often reflected on the time when the church was first organized in 1951.
