"How John continues his crushing work in radio and T.V. as well as pastoring two country churches amazes everyone, including his surgeon." This comment of his sister Leila (Mrs. Whitcombe) in her December 1993 circular letter could well be written over his whole ministry in the North country from 1936 until now. One could even add many more time and energy consuming activities. The only explanation lies in God's enabling grace. After having educated him (Titus 2:12 & 13) and transformed him, God's grace sustained him wonderfully. His humble fear of God, his burning Jove for Christ and His word, his compassion for souls would constantly renew his zeal in bringing the Gospel to the lost. His untiring effort to teach the redeemed contributed to the bounding of several solid churches. One incident I recall was significant for the future. It .must have been around 1934, brother Don Dinmick, John, and myself went to busy Dundas Street or Queen Street with its noisy street-cars to hold an open air meeting. None of us three was much of a singer but we sang and preached until our throats were sore. The number of workers did not matter, nor the number of listeners, the difficulties did not matter nor the success nor absence of success. Nothing mattered except the proclamation of the grace of God in Christ and it was so for John till his promotion to glory. I cannot refrain from quoting a recent letter he wrote me on February 14th, 1994 in which he refers to the recent passing of Rev. Samuel Dempster: "Some who seemed to be irreplaceable as God-given associates in our lives have been deactivated and removed from the places and functions where they served so well; but the grace that made and gave them is still doing all that is needed to accomplish what is best for us and the work where God is present to help. " The same words could now include John himself promoted into the presence of His beloved Lord. May God raise up many workers of this same spiritual caliber and determination. F.
