Ezra got Cassie to the meadow, he started to sit under the tree with her, but she said "No Ezra, I want the sun on my face, please? go to the middle of the meadow, where we spent that day together." Ezra nodded and carried her to the middle of the meadow, then sat down, never letting go of her. He was holding her tight, not bothering to fight back the tears,. She reached up and touched his face, wiping the tear away. "Ezra, I love you and I would not trade these last months with you for anything, not even my life. I want you to promise me you will go on and fall in love again." She said quietly, then closed her eyes for a moment, when she opened them again, Ezra was looking at her with concern. "I will try Cassie, but you have to understand, until you, I never loved anyone before, so falling in love again is not going to be easy." He responded, the tears coming again. "Ezra, my love, I know it is hard for you, but I know in my heart you will find someone else one day." She whispered, her voice becoming softer and softer. "No one could be as special as you Cassie, you have made me a different person, you have touched my soul and left and indelible mark that could never be taken away. I was not a very good person, I fear that I still am not a good person, but you have made me better than I was." He replied. "Ezra, I am going now, please kiss me while I can still feel your mouth on mine." She mumbled. Ezra bent and took her mouth with his, caressing her lips with his tongue, trying to let her feel as much of him, and wanting to feel as much of her, as he could. He gently caressed her tongue with his, tasting her sweetness for the last time. After a few moments, she became limp in his arms, he stopped kissing her, looking at her angelic face, it looked so peaceful. He touched his fingers to her neck, there was no pulse, he buried his face in her neck and hair and wept heavily. The love of his life was gone, the emptiness he felt inside was unbearable, he was certain that the gaping hole in his heart and soul, would never be filled. Chris and Mary had followed Ezra, waiting for Cassie to pass, then giving him some time alone, but now they approached. Chris took Cassie's body and carried it to his horse, so he could take her to the undertaker, Mary sat next to Ezra, she could see the pain and grief on his face, she took, him in her arms and held him tight, he cried heavily, as did Mary, he held on to her like a lifeline. It took many months, but Ezra began to return to normal, he would never be the same, but he was getting better, he visited Cassie's grave, in the meadow, often. |
