1st November 2000 Napster have signed a deal that will keep them open. But this will mark an end to the 'free' mp3 sharing that over 20million world wide have enjoyed for so long. The deal was signed yesterday with one of the companies suing the mp3 giant. Users will still be able to download their favorite music, but this time at a price!�� 18th October 2000 Chat Room News... A US court states that ISP's should be able to identify anyone who posts defamatory messages in chat rooms or on discussion boards. As posting with an anonymous name doesn't make you 'unknown' to your service provider, we suggest that you stop badmouthing your employers on every discussion board or chatroom on the net, or face the sack! The court has also ruled in favour of revealing the users identity before anything has been proven. 14th October 2000 The Nintendo Game Cube... The next generation consoles are surely about to take gaming to yet another level. Next on the scene in the eagerly awaited Nintendo Game Cube. The Japanese giant have announced it's American release for the autumn of 2001. It arrives in the UK soon after. A connection to the Internet allows games to be played online, with a cordless controller giving the user much more freedom to maneuver. The system will be disk orientated and run from 8cm disks instead of the N64's cartridges. It looks good, and my sources tell me its worth waiting for. In my opinion it looks to have the most potential out of all the new systems.� Dreamcast... Three new items are due for release on the Dreamcast. Sega have plans for a mouse, a new memory unit and a microphone. The products are expected to arrive this coming month. If you have any more console news please send them in. 6th October 2000 Cool sites It is estimated that there are over 30 million Internet domains registered. See the latest figures at Domainstats.comUnmuseum.net. Includes UFOs, dinosaurs, odd science etc. Domain watch... Domain watch site ICANN has asked for new top-level domain name suffixes. Beware for .biz .movie and .pro. The best ones are to be picked this November. A full list can be seen at Icann.net 4th October 2000 Napster News Ironically the only chance Napster have of staying open was made on behalf of Sony, one of the firms now suing them. A ruling made in 1984 lets firms sell videotapes that can duplicate copyrighted material. In September figures suggest that over 1.4 billion songs were downloaded from Napsters 100 or so servers. ISP news... The only totally free ISP we have come across in the UK is the X-Stream Network. It allows you to have unmetered access to the Internet at off peak times for a monthly fee of... wait for it... nothing! The catch is, they display adverts at the top of your browser. So if you can put up with the ads it's a pretty good service. The only other drawback is the lines get very busy and you very rarely get to connect on your first attempt, as with all other free ISP's. Hints and tips for searching with Infoseek... Its case sensitive, so you can type capital letters for peoples names. The search methods use streaming which means a search for computer will return items for 'computer', 'computers', 'computing'... If you would like to view a list of the sites that are linked to a certain site, you can type in 'link' before the address of a web site. Instead, you can also type the word 'site' to view all of that sites component pages. 26th September 2000 Windows ME Reports flying in tell me that Windows ME sold over 250,000 copies in it's first four days on sale. Time to connect... The frantic use of the Internet now looks to be slowing. Figures recently released show that in two years time, everyone who wants to surf the net will be, leaving around 30 per cent of Americans not wishing to be connected. The UK net usage seems to be around three years behind the states' with everyone who wants to be online getting connected by 2005. 24th September 2000 Did you know... There are over one billion web pages on the Internet that you will never see as they are not linked to any other pages or listed by a search engine. The only way anyone can access them is to type in their exact address! 22nd September 2000 Does size matter? Google.com has the worlds largest search engine. It's official, the number of URL's indexed is now over one billion! If anyone tried to print all those pages out on paper and stack them on top of each other, it would be 70 miles high, which is more than twice it's nearest rival. 21st September 2000 Napster news... Canadian rockers Barenaked Ladies have flooded mp3 site Napster with files claiming to be their latest single. Try to download it and you'll find a hint of the song followed by an advert advising you to go but it. View the Earth from above... Note to all the Geography students out there. GlobeXplorer.com is hosting satellite pictures covering the whole planet. Pictures include detailed aerial shots of towns and cities. Photos originate from satellites situated around the globe that sit in the Earth's atmosphere. The downside is the quality of some pictures, which is understandable considering they come from different sources other than US satellites. However, it's all free and very quick to view. It's pretty interactive as you can view certain places with a simple search. The site launched this Tuesday is a must for any science, aerospace or astronomy buff! |
