search engine and directory guide.Welcome to the search engine and directory guide. You know each search engine has a different method of listing sites. This is because they each have their own algorithm to spider and index your web page. We have listed some of the top ten in an attempt to provide more detailed information on the site submission process. The search engines 'can be' the best method of site promotion. Before you read this guide, you might want to take a look at out Meta Tag Tips. Yahoo! Yahoo isn't a search engine, they are a directory. The difference is, directories have employees visiting your site instead of 'robots'. As this is a manual process, obviously it will take longer which is why it takes around six weeks to get listed in Yahoo! Whereas search engines have an automatic process of crawling your site, then indexing it. You must remember that a neatly designed site with fair quality content is more likely to be reviewed than a poor site. On a search, Yahoo only looks for the title and description of each site that is provided during the submission process. A good idea would be to include the keywords you specified in both your site title and description. Alta Vista This search engine reads meta tags. The main thing to here is that their algorithm is case sensitive. Therefore a search for 'SOFTWARE' will return a different set of results than a search for 'software'. Excite The Excite algorithm does not read meta tags. Their indexing process usually takes between two to four weeks. My advice here is to include a short and descriptive title. Hotbot One of the best search engines for reading meta tags. It looks at keywords in not only your title tag, but also your description tag. Infoseek The search engine robot is very quick on crawling your site and indexing it. Again, it take all meta tags into consideration. There are tens, if not hundreds of meta tags, all having their own features. For more information on the important ones for search engine listing visit our Meta Tag Tips page. Lycos This search engine looks at the body text of your page. Include the keywords and description tags, but your page content is the main thing here.
