Bandwidth

Bandwidth means the amount of information that can be transferred over a network.

Bot

A Bot is a computer program that searches the Internet for things or information.

Cache

The Cache is a folder on your hard disk that saves the text and graphics of the web pages you visit. When you view the page again the page is loaded from the cache and not the web. Only the new parts of the page are loaded from the web.

Cookies

Cookies are very small files. They are placed on your computers hard disk by some web sites. The file may contain information such as your username on a message board. When you visit that site again, you will not have to retype your information in the username text box.

Download

Download means transferring a file from the web to your hard disk.

Emoticons

There are lots of emoticons you can use when on the web. They are also called smileys. A happy face equals :).

Encryption

A way of making data jumbled to everyone except the recipient.

Firewall

A way of preventing people from accessing a private network.

Freeware

An application that is available to use for free.

FTP Programs

File Transfer Protocol is the means of downloading and uploading files to and from the Internet

Gateway

A certain computer that controls your access to the net.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format is a file format used for saving images to the Internet. Use for images that are small.

Hosting

To store files on a computer that is always connected to the Internet.

HTML

This stands for Hyper Text Mark up Language. When people design a web page, they write HTML 'tags' that decide the colour, font and positioning of the text. Your browser reads these tags and displays it on the screen.

HTML Email

An email that is written with HTML tags. It can be displayed like a web page containing different colours, font's and images.

Hyperlink

Lines of text that you are able to click that take you to another page or site on the Internet.

IRC

IRC or Internet Relay Chat lets you have conversations with people from all over the world in real time.

ISDN

ISDN or Integrated Services Digital Network uses digital lines instead of the more commonly used analogue lines.

ISP

An Internet Service Provider is the company that give you access to the Web.

Java

A programming language that is suited for the Internet.

JPEG

Joint Photographic Experts Group. A file format used for saving images to the Internet. Use for large images or photos as it reduces the loading time.

Mail Server

This is the hardware and software used to send email.

MP3

MPEG layer 3 is a type of compression used save a large quality music file to a small computer file making download from the net less time consuming.

Netiquette

When using the web, a certain etiquette is used. For example, typing in capitals is considered shouting.

Pixels

A unit of colour on the computer screen. The display you see is made up of thousands of these tiny pixels. If the resolution is high, then there are more pixels, thus making the page sharper. If the resolution is low, there are less pixels leading to a poorer quality picture.

POP 3

Post Office Protocol 3 is the means by which your email program receives data from your Internet Service Providers mail server.

Shareware

An application that is free of charge to use. This may be for a limited time period.

Spam

Junk Mail on the Internet

Unmetered

Free calls to the Internet.

Upload

Upload means transferring a file from one computer to another. Web Pages on your hard disk must be transferred to a web server before it can be viewed over the Internet.

URL

Uniform Resource Locator. The address or sometimes called the location of a web page on the Internet.

WAP

Wireless Application Protocol allows things like mobile phones and pages to understand and receive information from the Internet.

Web Server

A computer that is permanently connected to the Internet.

Webmaster

Someone who updates and oversees the everyday maintenance of a web site.

Zip

A compression file usually used for MP3s and other large files.
