Lorane Highway just below Friendly Street, looking toward the Madison intersection. Note the slope of the road in this location: local lore has it that a city or county employee, who used to work on the construction of German autobahns and racetracks, borrowed equipment from work and managed to sculpt a few curves for better high-speed traction before he got caught and, needless to say, fired. |

Lorane Highway above Friendly Street/Whitten Drive, looking downhill. The 1910 home on this corner is a Eugene Historic Landmark listed as the Young-Pallett House which now houses the Kjaers House In The Woods Bed and Breakfast. The house was built by William E. Young, a Minnesota attorney who moved here because of ill health in 1908, but continued poor health made it impossible for him to finish the home. The house plans for the Craftsman bungalow may have been purchased from a catalog, possibly Sears or Craftsman. William Young was one of the signers of the petition to establish Lorane Highway. |

Lorane Highway, a little further uphill. A hillside spring in this curve provided a natural stop for the stage coach as it traveled out of town. Today, some of the puddles caused by the spring have been planted with water irises to absorb excess moisture. |
