Hori Ngawai Smith
Hori Ngawai Smith is my great- grandfather. The ninth son of Hachem Smith and Tauarai Smith, Hori Smith married three times and had children with all of these wives. One of his daughters, born 1918, to his second wife lives in Nuhaka, still today. By her account, “Hori was a good man and she was his favorite”. By his first wife,
Okeroa Parata Ngere for whom my mother was named, he had 8 children. His second wife,
Horiwia TeKapu and he had 3 children and his third wife,
Mere Manu
had two children.
