Nanny Bessie, as we knew her brought our mother (Olga Okeroa Smith) up. Born to Nanny Bessie's brother
Matiu Porou Smith and
May Thorpe, our Mum, Olga grew up at Nuhaka with Nanny Bessie and her second husband Kauri Whaitiri.
She was never legally adopted by Nanny Bessie and Grandpa Kauri. There was no issue from this marriage.
Nanny Bessie and Grandpa Kauri also brought up 2 others, a grand-daughter, Betty who was killed in a car crash in Auckland, and their great-grandson (Betty's son). Bessie (Irihapeti) and Kauri legally adopted their great grandson, who bears the name Whaitiri.
