The Best of the Rest
Part Two

Summer 2001

At long last, we finally saw our Red Admiral. Funnily enough, it was halfway up
the hill we had looked for it so many times the year before ! However, this
wasn't the only butterfly we saw this season which was new to us. here are
the others.

Common Blue

(Polyommatus Icarus)
We ranged a little further afield to see this one,
to slightly wetter ground in a local wildlife reserve.
A very small, and strikingly beautiful butterfly.

Green Hairstreak
(Callophrys Rubi)
We saw this one quite early in the season.
Unusually its the underwing which is the more colourful,
green with a white streak, hence the name.
Like the common blue, it is rather small.

Small Skipper
(Thymelicus Sylvestris)
We probably saw these last year as well,
only didn't notice. On the hill, where there are
so many meadow browns, we also saw many of these,
from mid-June until quite late in the season.
They are quite a bright orange colour.

Gatekeeper
(Pyronia Tithonus)

This one is quite similar to the meadow brown,
and we saw it quite early in the season, at Kenfig Pool.

Wall Brown
(Lasiommata Megera)
We were told that you could see this one
on a hillside a few miles away, and were lucky
enough to see a few on our very first visit !
