How it all began

This is Jessie's painting of a Peacock Butterfly ( inachis io) In the early summer of 2000 we saw one of these beauties on the hill above our home in Port Talbot, South Wales. We had no idea of what it was, only that it looked very beautiful. We found out what it was by borrowing a book from the library, and we were so interested in what was in the book, that we have been looking for butterflies ever since.

Of all the butterflies in the book,the one which the girls most wanted to see was the Red Admiral ( Vanessa Atalanta) This is Jenny's painting of one. In 2000, we didn't see one !

We started looking for a red admiral straight after we had seen the peacock butterfly. We didn't find one for over a year. However we did get to see many beautiful butterflies in the course of our search. You can see some of these on the next few pages
