The Outer Banks
By Lyndon Beharry
The damp chill of February's mist
Enshrouds the beach in a deep, bleak gray.
I stroll at the water's edge seeking the kiss
And the shock of cold, sharp, salty spray.
The timbre of the Outer Banks is stark,
And the lighthouse miles down the way
Struggles to pierce the grayish dark
On this short, stormy Winter's Day.
    My soul questions the loneliness
As I ponder the seashells strewn about the place,
Like the maid forgot to pick up after the guests
Leaving them for me, for company or solace.
But then a pod of porpoises glides past!
While gulls overhead circle for scraps.
Partnered forever in this eternal dance.
And I'm dancing, too, from a distance.
Nags Head and Kitty Hawk
The Wright Brothers flew their first airplane here at Kitty Hawk, where the wind is constant and the salt air treats one's heart well.
The seafood on the Outer Banks is terrific and it's always fresh. But most restaurants and bars are closed from November through March. Then again, that's the best time to go if you need to get away from it all. It's an ideal locale to rest a weary spirit. Try it! Take a walk on the beach and feel the cold spray on your face. Visit the wildlife refuge just south of Kitty Hawk. You can even take a hang-glider up for a tour of the area! My favorite restaurant/bar is Goombays. They're open year-round!
