BREAKTHROUGH WINNERS


TravelAsia honoured breakthrough performers last week at its inaugural Breakthrough Awards night held at the Inter-Continental.

The awards, aimed at honouring individuals who have achieved excellence within their organisation and industry, were attended by more than 200 leading lights from the regional tourism industry.

Dato Amin Shah Omar bin Shah, chairman of Venture Asia Publishing, said at the function which also celebrated the company's first anniversary, "When I was asked to back Venture Asia, I entered into the venture with full confidence that the people, my partners, would make it fly. They have."

In voting the top performers, readers of TravelAsia also gave reasons for their choices.

The winners are:

Diethelm Travel, Thailand/Indochina/Myanmar: Tour Operator of the Year (Inbound); group general manager: Luzi Matzig

Ken-Air Tours Pte Ltd (Singapore): Tour Operator of the Year (Outbound); chairman: Kristine Goh

Shangri-La: Best Hotel Marketing; Hotel Marketeer of the Year: Vice president-marketing Robert Hutchinson

Cathay Pacific: Best Airline Marketing; Airline Marketeer of the Year: General manager-marketing and product: Tim Fitzsimmons

Thailand: Best Destination Marketing;

Destination Marketeer of the Year: Governor, Tourism Authority of Thailand: Seree Wangpaichitr

Bintan: Best New Destination Marketing; New Destination Marketeer of the Year: Executive director, Bintan Resort Management: Yeo Nai Meng

Alois Fassbind, executive vice president, Royal Cliff Beach Resort, Thailand: Hotelier of the Year.

Two merit awards were also given by the TravelAsia editorial team.

TravelAsia's choice for Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year was Dr Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, president and CEO, Bangkok Airways, for his vision in setting up a private airline in Thailand and for opening up new areas such as Samui and Sukhothai.

The Leadership award went to Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli, executive chairman of Malaysia Airlines, for turning MAS around from a loss situation in 1994 to a profitable concern, and for his courage in continuing to expand the airline despite the bleak financial picture.
