Matzig wins major conference bid
Issue of TTG Asia Jul 02 - Jul 08 1999
By Tom Racette
BANGKOK - Asian Trails has won the contract to handle most ground arrangements during the 49th annual meeting of German Travel Agents and Tour Operators Association (DRV) in Bangkok from November 10 to 14.
Group managing director, Mr Luzi Matzig, estimated pre- and post-conference tours for the 1,500 German delegates was worth more that 11 million baht (US$297,000). "This is a major event that comes around once every 30 years and is a coup for Asian Trails."
He called it a prime opportunity for an independent tour operator to get a foothold in the competitive German market. The move comes on the heels of Asian Trail's most recent feat of snatching the Kuoni account for Switzerland, France and Austria into Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar from Diethelm Travel.
Executive vice-president and chief executive officer Kuoni Switzerland, Mr Hans Lerch, said the contract was worth more than 100 million baht for the estimated 22,000 tourists the company sends each year.
He said Diethelm grossly underestimated the consequences when it started its "clean-up exercise" of top management. "Diethelm lost too many good staff over the last few months, and not all of them resigned but were asked to leave...There is no question in our mind that Diethelm will not be able to keep service levels and this is why Kuoni changed."
Mr Lerch said because most Asian Trails staff will come from Diethelm, they had the experience to do the job well. "What is more important is that these people are now highly motivated to prove they are much better than their previous employer thought they were."
