Asian Trails hooks the big fish
Kuoni Switzerland’s product manager for the Far East, Karin Jakobs, informed Diethelm Travel that it had lost the account after 30 years in a letter dated mid-June.
Asian Trails, managing director, Luzi Matzig, confirmed his company would handle the account effective 1 November. It includes business from Kuoni’s offices in Switzerland, France and Austria.
"It’s the big one," admitted Mr Matzig, who left Diethelm Travel earlier this year after 30 years with the Swiss company.
The veteran travel executive will celebrate his 50th birthday on 8 September in Samui and officially open his tour company on 9 September 1999 at the auspicious time of 0900 (UTC).
"I decided on UTC time because we might not be back from Samui in time for the 0900 local time ceremony."
His company will be opened by Kuoni Switzerland CEO Hans Lerch and another top travel executive from Europe, who he declined to name.
Giving Mr Lerch the honour of cutting the ribbon is understandable; his company will supply Asian Trails with Bt100 million revenue in the first year, about half of Mr Matzig’s budget.
Kuoni Switzerland is Thailand’s top European account in revenue terms. It sends approximately 20,000 tourists to Thailand compared to an estimated 25,000 for the German tour operator TUI. However TUI earns the local tour operator less, approximately Bt45 million a year.
Asian Trails will occupy 450 square metres of space in Bangkok,s Mercury Tower, Ploenchit. Of the 37 staff to be hired over the next few weeks, eight will concentrate on the Kuoni account. A web site was up and running last week at the address www.asiantrails.net.
DRV, the annual conference of the German Travel Agents Association scheduled for Bangkok later this year, confirmed that Asian Trails had been designated as one of the official tour suppliers.
Asian Trails was registered on 9 April with a registered capital of Bt12 million. Mr Matzig is the main shareholder with two others holding 3% each.
