Luzi Matzig in TravelAsia

Tour operators who attended the Economic Development
Forum and Visit Myanmar Year meeting held in Yangon last week
expressed surprise at the "openness" of the discussion.
Managing director of Travel Bug Holidays Singapore
Prithpal Singh praised the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry
for its organisation. "It was well put together and what
was impressive was the very open discussion. That they had all
the right officials there to answer each and every question, that
was impressive."
Luzi Matzig, general manager of Diethelm Travel Thailand,
who got a chance to ask a question on bank fees on money transfers
into Myanmar, was also taken aback by the "open and honest"
discussion.
"Usually, politics is not discussed, but this
time, everything was out in the open. The officials all came prepared
with answers."
According to business leaders in Myanmar, the forum
marked a first in many respects - the first time foreign investors
had gotten together with local officials and the first time foreign
media had been in the same room, having a frank exchange, with
government officials.
A television newscast that same evening also ran
all speeches in full, even the political parts were left uncensored, much to the surprise of local delegates. - Yeoh Siew Hoon
