Luzi Matzig in TravelAsia

It is the most cruel irony of all. Red tape has snarled up the Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Caravan, but not on the Burmese side as had been expected, but on the Thai side. Thirty four-wheel drive vehicles had been due to make the journey next month from Bangkok to Yangon, but the Thai immigration division declined to open up a checkpoint at Kanchanaburis Pilok border point in western Thailand. The Burmese, in contrast, had cleared all snags earlier, defying critics who had said authorities there would never give the green light to such a project. This turn of events means the Friendship Caravan has been postponed to May. Which must have been pretty embarassing for the Tourism Authority of Thailand which wants position Thailand as the gateway to Mekong and build friendly ties with its neighbours through tourism. Caravan organiser Luzi Matzig of Diethelm Travel had written to the new Minister of Tourism Pitak Intrawityanunt to get his aid in opening up the border, but to no avail. Looks like Thai immigration does not share the same friendly feelings as the countrys tourism officials.
