ASIAN TRAILS WINS KUONI

COUP FOR MATZIGS NEW COMPANY

By Raini Hamdi

Luzi Matzig's new company, Asian Trails, has won the Kuoni account, Diethelm Travel's largest account by far, which it has been handling for more than 30 years.

As of November 1 this year, the account will shift to Asian Trails, which will handle Kuoni's clients from Switzerland, France and Austria into Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. (Kuoni UK is handled by Tour East.)

The business is worth more than 100 million baht (US$2.7 million), comprising around 22,000 tourists per year.

A delighted Matzig said the company was off to a good start with the Kuoni account.

Matzig left Diethelm end May after 28 years with the company and set up Asian Trails, which will officially open on September 9.

He holds a 51 per cent share in Asian Trails. Another 25 per cent is owned by an individual whose identity cannot be disclosed yet, while the rest is owned by other managers and staff of Asian Trails.

Asian Trails will have 37 staff when it opens, including "the best staff from Diethelm", and several newcomers.

Asked to describe Asian Trails in a nutshell, Matzig said, "We are a motivated team of knowledgeable travel experts aiming to provide above average service."

What difference would he like to see in Asian Trails compared with Diethelm?

"I would like us to produce programmes that are more tailormade to the different markets. The needs of passengers from the US market are different from the needs of passengers from the German market; the French want more culture compared with the Dutch; and so on.

"We have to bear this in mind and come up with tailormade programmes. This makes a difference in a competitive world."

He added, "We have created a variety of totally new tours in countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Yunnan (China) and Malaysia, with emphasis on flexibility and personal service."

His goal is for Asian Trails to become a leader in the Asian tourism industry in three years.

Asian Trails' office is being fitted on the 15th floor of Mercury Tower in Ploenchit Road.

It will start with 450sqm of office space in Bangkok, as well as an office each in Phuket and Samui.

ASIAN TRAILS TARGETS

  • For its first year of operations, Asian Trails is targeting to handle more than 35,000 pax and a turnover of US$6 million.

  • Its biggest markets will be Europe, followed by the US, Australia and Asia.

  • Its base clientele will be tour operators business, but growth in the number of individual travellers booking through the Internet is expected to be faster in the years to come. Asian Trails has already set up 15 sites on the Internet.
