Luzi Matzig in TravelAsia
TravelAsia, September 3, 1999
By Luke Clark
Asian Overland Tours Malaysia and Panorama Tours Indonesia are in talks with Asian Trails Thailand and MAS Travel Singapore, as well as operators from Hong Kong, Australia and Burma, to form an alliance. A brainchild of Asian Overlands Anthony Wong, the grouping is envisaged to maintain stand-alone operations in each country, but will combine resources in establishing offshore offices, client referrals, research, marketing, human resource training, insurance, bulk buying, information technology and banking systems. If successful, the grouping could immediately establish offices in feeder markets in the UK, the US, Central Europe and Australia, through the existing links of the operators. "We are all independent companies, but we have to become inter-dependent," said Wong. He added, "We have to amalgamate before being taken over by the bigger boys." Wong confirmed talks were underway with Luzi Matzig of Asian Trails, Mohammed Harharah of MAS Travel, plus three other operators, and would continue at ITA in Hong Kong this week, before the grouping meets in Kuala Lumpur in October during the Grand Prix. Matzig of Asian Trails said he had held some general discussions on a future cooperation with Panorama "but nothing has been agreed upon". Wong envisaged the alliances business to grow exponentially, by utilising each companys network. "We are looking at a global alliance which also incorporates Australia and the US. The system is through friendship and business. They go hand in hand." Panoramas managing director Rocky Praputranto is all for it, saying, "We believe this will strengthen each individual company, give us more opportunities, and lift the quality standards of each."
