| ***** | Golden Compass by Philip Pullman |
| Lyra lives in a world alternate to our own. It can be said to be set in the past, but there is one major difference. She has a daemon, a shapeshifter if you will, that is specially linked to her. And she's not the only one, everyone in her world has them. While someone is young, these daemons can change shape at will, but once someone reaches a certain age the daemon chooses a more permanent form. Not only this, but if either one dies, so does the other. Lastly, a person and their daemon are limited on the distance between them. Well, that holds true unless you are a witch. Enter a mystifying world of witches, daemons, and talking polar bears, to help Lyra discover the origins of dust. | |
| ***** | Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman |
| The second installment of the Dark Materials Trilogy. Lyra has passed through the rainbow of dust and discovered a world unlike her own. There she meets Will, a troubled young man, who has also traveled from a different world, although unknowingly. Together they decide to solve the mystery of the worlds, and discover the monstrous creatures that only adults can see. Will soon discovers his innate ability to cut through the worlds with a special knife. Full of mystery, friendship, courage, and trust, this is a must read. | |
| ***** | The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman |
| The final installment in a breathtaking trilogy. Lyra has been kidnapped, and Will rushes to rescue her. Old friends return, and old enemies turn to friends. Abilities are learned, and ties are pushed to the limit. With worlds falling apart, and daemons and humans at stake, Will and Lyra push themselves to return the world to normal. But the worst part may be the fact that they may not be able to live together. This is a conclusion you will NOT want to miss. | |
| ***** | The Sight by David Clement-Davies |

But not is all right, and an old ally will return from the grave, an occurrence that will shake the foundations of the family ties. | |
| **** | Firebringer by David Clement-Davies |
| Another thriller by the bringer of The Sight. This time he deals with deer. The old leader has been been murdered, a new one has arisen to change the old ways. This new leader has decided that one cannot rule without an iron 'antler'. But not all hope is lost, for the old leader has left a promising child that will change the world. He is the chosen one, the Firebringer, that will unite all creatures, and make enemies friends. A book with the lesson of faith and trust, this is enthralling tale. | |
| **** | The Hidden Arrow of Maether |
| I thought this was a cute book, very simple, and very easy to read. It's about a young girl named Linn. Her father passed away long ago, and her step father mistreats her. Her mother is an unemotional stone that goes along with anything. In her world there are different gods, but lately the old gods have been replaced with new, more evil ones. Then one day, Linn discovers a symbol on her hand. Could she hold the key to saving the people of Maether? And if she does, does she have the strength to do it? | |
| ***** | Old Magic by Marianne Curley |

| ***** | The Secret of Dragonhome by John Peel |
| This was a confusing book to catergorize, but I'm putting it in fantasy because I feel like it. Certain people in this world are called Talents. As the name implies, these people have special talents. But they are nothing like what we would think. Melayne and her brother Sarrow, for example can talk to animals and pursuade people. They are on the run from the king, who forces Talents to fight in wars. Melayne discovers the real reason the talents fight, and start a rebellion. Then she and her brother flee to a mysterious place called Dragonhome, when they meet the even more mysterious Lord Sander. He hides a grave secret, and a haunting past. Will they be able to help each other find what they are searching for? | |

| ***** | Dragons of a Spring Dawning by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis |
| There are many Dragonlance chronicles, but this is a good one. Full of elaborate characters and plot twists, it's a good read. In this world, there are elves, mages, dragons, dwarves, little people, and all sorts of folks. It's very similar to LOTR in that way, but there is no ring in this story. You have the heros, a motley crew of different folk, thrown together by old ties, searching for answers to questions they learn along the way. | |
| ***** | Dragons of a Winter Night by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis |

| ***** | Dragons of an Autumn Twilight |
| The climatic conclusion of this trilogy pushes the two sides to an all out war. On one side you have the Queen of Darkness, on the other you have our companions. They have aquired dragons, mysterious magical orbs, and a silver dragonlance along their journies. In this end, there will be betrayal, deciet, weakness, but strength. Everyone will be pushed to their limits, but they will be heroes. | |

| ***** | Sabriel by Garth Nix |
| Techincally the first installment of the Lirael and Abhorsen stories, but it does not have to do with Lirael. This takes place before all that, and is Sabriel's story. Sabriel is gifted with the power her father possesses, that of the Abhorsen. She takes special training to learn the way to protect the spirits after death. But after a message from her father about a Necromancer, her world is thrown into chaos. Full of twists and turns, it's a VERY good book. | ***** | Eragon by Christopher Paolini |

| ** | Dragon Cauldron by Laurence Yep |
| Can't really remember this book, but I know I read it. There was a monkey, someone named Shimmer, and of course dragons. This is the basic save the dragons tale, but the methods of doing it are different. Like the title, the heroes search for the Dragon's Cauldron. Will they find it in time to save the dragons? | |
| ** | Dragon War by Laurence Yep |
| Okay, this is a continuation of Dragon Cauldron, and a somewhat better story. The Bone King has come back to steal the Dragon Cauldron and the soul of a human being, and has convinced Shimmer's brother to help her. So now Shimmer and her old friends must stop the Bone King from boiling the ocean and destroying the dragons, while at the same time convincing her brother to stop his madness. | |

| *** | So you want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane |
Nita loved to read. One day, after escaping some bullying, she goes to the library and picks up a book entitled So you want to be a Wizard. Entrigued, she reads the first page before taking it home. Suddenly she is thrown into a mission, and learns just what it means to be a wizard. There she meets Kit, another young wizard. This series tells of their stories through dangerous missions to stop the Fallen One from destoying the world. But they are forced to fight their own demons as well. A good series to check out. |
|
| ***** | Riddle of the Wren by Charles de Lint |
| Dreams can tell you things, both good and bad. Minda has been told bad things, and is afraid to fall asleep. When she does, she is cold and alone, a feeling she is not to comfortable with. But then she meets a young man named Jan, that has been imprisoned in this dream world, and only she is the one that can save him. She must sovle the Riddle of the Wren, and save him. But to do so, she must confront her own demons, and find out who, and what, she really is. This is a really good book, definitely one to pick up. | |
| ***** | Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling |
| Okay, do I honestly have to explain this series? EVERYONE KNOWS! You don't even have to pick up the books either. I like the third one the best, and I wasn't thrilled with the fifth. I really want to read the sixth, and if they end up killing Hagrid, I'm going to track this lady down and protest. I would also like it better if Harry and Hermione got together. | |
| *** | Firebringer by Meredith Ann Pierce |
| This is a different Firebringer than the one from before. This has to do with a unicorn, and his fight to return his family to the homeland. He learns to speak with other creatures and discovers his destiny. | |
| *** | Dark Moon by Meredith Ann Pierce |
| The second book in the trilogy. It's hard to distinguish between the three. I think this is the one where he is captured and taken away from his home. He finds himself in a world with hornless unicorns and men. There he meets an ambitious horse who helps him escape. But not before he learns the gift of fire. | |
| *** | Son of the Summer Stars by Meredith Pierce |
| In this climactic ending, the prince of legend is forced to meet his destiny. It is time to reclaim thier homeland. But with his father gone wild, his herd falling apart, and his two young kids with mysterious powers, he has a lot to deal with. What he learns threatens to tear him apart. And when push comes to shove, he is not the unicorn to strike the finished blow. What does this mean? | |
| *** | Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien |
| Yes, it was a book first. But since it's a movie, do I really have to go into this? You know the story of the one ring, and blah blah blah. My favorite characters is this are the Ents. Be warned, the books are a lot longer than the movies, and much more elaborate. They're still good though. | |
| **** | The Blue Girl by Charles De Lint |
| Another hit by Charles De Lint, this one deals with faeries. But they aren't your ordinary faeries. In fact, they aren't that nice at all. For example, they killed a student at the school they occupy. And when this ghost meets up with a girl named Imogene, he decides he wants her to believe in his faeries. That's not the smartest thing to do, and it soons catches the attention of the Darkness. Now they're after Imogene, and she must resort to her old gang ways to survive. But will her newest, and truest, friend Maxine continue to stand by her side? | |
| **** | Wicked by Gregory Maquire |
| This is a new take on the Wizard of Oz, a neater tale if you will. It explains the story of the Wicked Witch, and it turns out she's not really the bad guy. She's actually not all that bad, it's her childhood that's twisted. It also turns out that the Wizard of Oz isn't all that nice at all. Look at it this way, all the roles are flipped. Another thing that was neat is she actually has some connection to the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow. It's fascinating how she knows them too. And it also explains about the shoes. This was such a good book that it was turned into a play, which had very high ratings. So I'll give you a word of advice, READ IT! | |
