This is the story of two girls who got sucked into a mysterious book "Shi Jin Ten Sho". It's a book in ancient Chinese.

The two girls are Yuuki Miaka and Hongo Yui both 9th grade student went to the National Library to study for their exam. They accidentally found "Shi Jin Ten Sho".

Miaka and Yui met a mysterious young man with the character "ghost" on his forehead who saved their lives.
A sudden red light brought Yui back to the library. But what happened to Miaka?
Yui picks up the book, and realizes that what happened to her an Miaka was written down on the pages of the book. She knows that it wasn't a dream. She starts reading the book, the main character became Miaka.

Miaka was left alone in the book tries to look for her best friend Yui. She eventually got to the city Konan. She decides to look for the mysterious young man to help her find Yui. (She doesn't know that Yui went back).
Once she found him, they encounter the emperor of Konan.
Things got very complicated once she excepted to be the Maiden of Suzaku.

Let me Explain what is Suzaku and all this book/ China thing.

In Chinese Astrology, the sky is divided in Four sections each ruled by a sacred Animal: Phoenix - Dragon - White Tiger - Snake Turtle.
In Japanese is known as Suzaku - Seiryuu - Byakko - Genbu.

Each section has 7 constellations.
A maiden is the girl that will summon the sacred beast to protect it's country. This girl will be helped by her 7 seishis (warriors).

Miaka end up being the Maiden of Phoenix, or Suzaku no Miko. And she has to find her 7 warriors.
But what's gonna happen to her, is she going to stay in the book?
And what is with this book? If it's a Chinese story why is it in Japan?
