The temperature on this planet has gone through many cycles, for a number of reasons having to do with warming/cooling of the sun and the amount of so-called greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Temperature has varied in historical time as well. Before 1400, for example, it was warmer in Europe (and probably other places) than it is now.
Anyone can see on a mammoth that it lived in a arctic
zone. And Siberia is much less barren than you seem to think.
