You certainly ask the $64,000 question. WHY?
Well, it was prophesied!
Jehovah's Witnesses are the modern "temple" organization and it was prophesied that the temple woud be in its "right condition" after 2300 evenings and mornings, reduced to 1150 days, subtracted from 1260 gives you 110 days/years of operation ending in 1996. 1886 was when the "Studies in the Scriptures" came out.
But why has Jehovah used this organization, even though corrupt?
First of all, the Bible specifically prophesies not only that it would be corrupted by a the "mystery religion" cult influence but it indicated it would be very early in its history.
This is the famous illustration of the "wheat and weeds" found in Matthew 13. Basically, it talks about a man planting good wheat in a field. The field represents Jehovah's organization. But then the devil came in and sowed weeds. This was all before the wheat even showed up. That means, before the growth of the organization got off to a good start, the weeds were planted and very intermixed with the weeds.
So what to do? Pull out the weeds?
No. It was decided, in order not to lose any of the wheat, to simply let things grow with the wheat and weeds together until the "harvest" or the end of the system of things when the kingdom would be set up, within one generation. Then the weeds would be exposed.
So what we have here is just what you see within Jehovah's organization. You have an organization accepted by Jehovah and used by him, but that now we are starting to see the "weeds" being exposed.
"Weeds" though, in the Bible, or "tares" specifically had reference to a very wheat-like weed that resembled wheat, so that it would be very hard to tell the wheat from the weeds. But in ancient mystery religion worship and the Eleusinian Mysteries, this weed produced a fungus that was hallucinagenic and used in the Mystery religion cult to influence initiates during a secret meeting wherein they would see some mysterious sight.
Thus the "weeds" are directly connected with the cult and the surviving secret societies of this cult, including Freemasony, would be something to consider as infiltrating and influencing the witness organization early on.
There is critical reason to believe that the organization is infiltrated by some of these cults based upon several things:
1) Obviously the globe with wings is a cultic symbol associated with Freemasonry along with some other symbolisms like the eye in the pyramid, which Russell put onto his literature.
2) The issue of getting out of "Babylon the Great" the great mystery woman, is related to these modern influenced mystery religions and the command in Revelation is to "Get out of her my people" which also suggests that many witnesses would also be part of some of these secret societies, about to be exposed.
3) The Watchtower cover itself, which features towers (Artemis was the goddess of fortresses) and other symbolism have graced the cover the Watchtower magazine for decades. Of course, this is secret symbolism.
4) Some of their teachings, particularly in the volume 7, the "Finished Mystery" can clearly be linked to cultic influence since it has a special chapter on "Song of Solomon" which is a cultic book about Artemis and mystery religion Mother Goddess worship, parading as an inspired book of the Bible.
So if you keep investigating, get ready for some bigger surprises.
Your own article, though, is suggesting that the "weeds" and the mystery-cult connection to the WTS is part of exposing "Babylon the Great" connections to this Witness "cult".
Also, anybody who tries to suggest that there is no connection to the WTS and to the Freemasons or any other mystery cult is a possible cult member themselves, so watch out!
In the meantime, there is lots on the NET now regarding the cultic religions and their influence and secret societies.
