Who You Callin' A Bitch?"
A Look at Sexism in Music Today
by Lesley
In the world of male-targeted music, nice doesnt get you anywhere as an artist.  Somehow along the way, it became cool to be sexist.  Some of the most popular artists are the ones with the most extreme sexism in their music.  Millions of albums are sold to teenagers and even younger kids who eat up these misogynist messages and spit them back out at the shock of their parents but at the acceptance of their peers.  How bad is this problem?  It may be worse than you think because some of it is too subtle to notice and some is so extreme you wont hear it on the radio.  On the surface, that may not sound bad, but it is.  The subtly sneaks into our minds without our noticing and the extreme is consumed through the albums kids buy. Three major genres of this highly consumed music will be covered; the first being rap, then rock, and lastly pop. What is being done to counteract it and psychological consequences of listening to such music are also discussed.

RAP

One of the pioneering rap groups in the early nineties was N.W.A., who has since broken up although two members are still successful rappers on a solo basis.  In the song, She Swallowed It they extensively describe receiving oral sex in a crude way, including a story about one woman: This is a bitch who did the whole crew/ she did it so much we made bets on who the hoe would love to go through/ and for the shit that she does give her a drum-roll/because the dumb bitch licks out the asshole/ and Ill let you videotape her/ and if you gotta gang of niggas the bitch will let you rape her/she likes sucking on dicks and licking up nut/ and will even take the broomstick up the butt/ just to say that she did with a rapper/ but her pussy was more fishy than red snapper (lyrics.astraweb.com, 2001).  In another song titled, "One Less Bitch, they describe their general attitude towards women, In reality a fool is one who believes all women are ladies; a nigga is one who believes all ladies are bitches/ And all bitches are created equal/ To me all bitches are the same, money hungry scandalous, groupie hoes, that's always riding on a nigga's dick/ always in a nigga's pocket/ (lyrics.astraweb.com, 2001).  Another rap group, yet much lighter is K7 who had the hit ComeBaby Come in which the lead rapper says, I slam the door/ huh/ when I comeinto the bedroom/ wam bam/ cause Im the king of the castle.  Hes proud of his control over the opposite sex.
A very popular currentrapper, Nelly, has sexist lyrics in his two released songs.  In Country Grammar he raps, can you hoes come out to play now/ Hey I'm, ready to cut you up any day now nonchalantly blurring the line between sex and violence.  The other song, EI,displays his need for control over women in the lyric Play by, my rules boo and you gon' stay high(lyrics.astraweb.com, 2001).  In the same song he continues to talk about receiving oral sex from them and leaving them.
A shock rap group with a large dedicated underground following is Insane Clown Posse who has a single called, Kiss the Clown.  Here are some repugnant lyrics from that song:
Finna ask Brenda on a little date
I heard this bitch likes to fight in clubs
Took her to a Might Max threw a pair of gloves
Wants to get her ass beat by a fat dyke
And left the money-ass bitch there for the night
Woke her in the morning, threw her in the trunk
Threw her in the tub, cuz the dumb bitch stunk
How you doing Brenda, mind if I bend ya
Over rover, do me like Dundy
I'm sure ya'd like that, ya little skank
And when I finished, I stuffed the fucking head in the fish tank
Back to the school, fat bitch in the locker
Couldn't fit her booty in, so I cut her booty out
(lyrics.astraweb.com, 2001)
